The Flavian amphitheatre, better known as the Colosseum. On a typical day in the arena people could watch animal hunts in the morning, with tigers, rhinos, giraffes, lions brought here from Africa ( venationes ). At lunch time there were the executions of criminals fed to the animals ( ad bestias) and in the afternoon the most famous entertainments, the gladiatorial combats ( munera). Gladiators were cheered by the crowd like modern football players.
