Christian history consecrated the date of the 19th March to St. Joseph, patron of the craftsmen, the carpenters and the protector of all fathers. In Rome San Giuseppe is also called “the Frittellaro” because according to an ancient legend, the man, in order to support his family in the Holy Land, improvised a job as a seller of pancakes (frittelle in Italian). A greedy tradition meant that the celebration dedicated to him was associated with bonfires and fried desserts, puffs filled with tasty pastry cream, a delicacy much appreciated and still known like BIGNÉ DI SAN GIUSEPPE. Typical Roman pastries, they are made with a cooked dough enriched with butter and eggs, formed into little balls and deep fried and, more often than not, filled with custard.

Here you see 2 fathers and two sons in a piece of marble:

Aeneas, Ascanius and Anchises fleeing Troy, by G.L. Bernini, 1618-19, Borghese Gallery, Rome.

This was the Bernini's first commission from Cardinal Scipione Borghese. It probably started around 1618 and finished the succeeding year, by the 20 years old artist.
It was one of a number of sculptures that would end up in the Villa Borghese, now the Galleria Borghese.

Bernini's inspiration for the work was the Aeneid, the Latin epic poem which tells the story of Aeneas, a Trojan who left his home city and eventually ended up in Italy, where he became a progenitor of the Roman people. The precise scene depicted is the moment when Aeneas carries his father, the elderly Anchises, and his son Ascanius from Troy, after it has been sacked by the Greek army. In his hand, Anchises carries a vessel with his ancestors' ashes, on the top of which are two tiny statues of "Dei Penates", Roman household gods.

When Gianlorenzo Bernini carved this sculptural group, he was still suffering a bit of the influence of Pietro, his father sculptor, but this artwork already demonstrates a perfect knowledge of the human body and a great ability to represent the expressions; in a single work we can see three different body types matching the ages of the characters: the soft and curvy Ascanius, still young, and the vigorous and strong Aeneas create a constrast with the frail and wrinkled Anchises, marked by time and fatigue.

In the 1970's Pinin Brambilla Barcilon was called to restore da Vinci’s "The Last Supper". At the time, it looked like an impossible challenge.
Many tried to stop her, from the envious to the skeptical, including experts who were truly worried about the potential damage a restoration could cause to the already badly deteriorated painting.
Yet, Pinin Brambilla remained convinced of her ideas on how to approach this incredible endeavor. And in the end, after 21 years she was able to prove to everyone that she was right.
"Distancing yourself (from the artwork) is always difficult. A part of you is lost" she said at the end of this work.

She died on December 12th 2020, at the age of 95.
