Christian history consecrated the date of the 19th March to St. Joseph, patron of the craftsmen, the carpenters and the protector of all fathers. In Rome San Giuseppe is also called “the Frittellaro” because according to an ancient legend, the man, in order to support his family in the Holy Land, improvised a job as a seller of pancakes (frittelle in Italian). A greedy tradition meant that the celebration dedicated to him was associated with bonfires and fried desserts, puffs filled with tasty pastry cream, a delicacy much appreciated and still known like BIGNÉ DI SAN GIUSEPPE. Typical Roman pastries, they are made with a cooked dough enriched with butter and eggs, formed into little balls and deep fried and, more often than not, filled with custard.

Dedicated to all those fathers who support their sons.

19 marzo 2021: BUONA FESTA DEL PAPÀ!
March 19,2021: HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!

Here you see 2 fathers and two sons in a piece of marble:

Aeneas, Ascanius and Anchises fleeing Troy, by G.L. Bernini, 1618-19, Borghese Gallery, Rome.

This was the Bernini's first commission from Cardinal Scipione Borghese. It probably started around 1618 and finished the succeeding year, by the 20 years old artist.
It was one of a number of sculptures that would end up in the Villa Borghese, now the Galleria Borghese.

Bernini's inspiration for the work was the Aeneid, the Latin epic poem which tells the story of Aeneas, a Trojan who left his home city and eventually ended up in Italy, where he became a progenitor of the Roman people. The precise scene depicted is the moment when Aeneas carries his father, the elderly Anchises, and his son Ascanius from Troy, after it has been sacked by the Greek army. In his hand, Anchises carries a vessel with his ancestors' ashes, on the top of which are two tiny statues of "Dei Penates", Roman household gods.

When Gianlorenzo Bernini carved this sculptural group, he was still suffering a bit of the influence of Pietro, his father sculptor, but this artwork already demonstrates a perfect knowledge of the human body and a great ability to represent the expressions; in a single work we can see three different body types matching the ages of the characters: the soft and curvy Ascanius, still young, and the vigorous and strong Aeneas create a constrast with the frail and wrinkled Anchises, marked by time and fatigue.

In the 1970's Pinin Brambilla Barcilon was called to restore da Vinci’s "The Last Supper". At the time, it looked like an impossible challenge.
Many tried to stop her, from the envious to the skeptical, including experts who were truly worried about the potential damage a restoration could cause to the already badly deteriorated painting.
Yet, Pinin Brambilla remained convinced of her ideas on how to approach this incredible endeavor. And in the end, after 21 years she was able to prove to everyone that she was right.
"Distancing yourself (from the artwork) is always difficult. A part of you is lost" she said at the end of this work.

She died on December 12th 2020, at the age of 95.

Located in the center of Piazza della Repubblica, the FONTANA DELLE NAIADI is certainly the most beautiful of the modern fountains in Rome. Built in 1888 on a project by Alessandro Guerrieri who placed four plaster lions around the large circular basin; these were then replaced in 1901 by the four bronze groups of the sculptor Mario Rutelli.
The NAIADS were the water nymphs, bearers of fecundity and refreshment and protectors of marriage; those represented are the nymph of the lakes, the nymph of the rivers, the nymph of the oceans and the nymph of the underground waters. At the center is the GLAUCO group (1912), symbolizing the dominion of man over natural strength. The water comes from the source of the Marcia water, one of the most famous in Rome.
At the center of much controversy, the Naiads were considered by some to be offensive to public modesty: they were therefore hidden for a certain period by a fence waiting for the official inauguration that was slow in coming. Perhaps the old papal Rome could not stand that in front of the basilica of S. Maria degli Angeli, these female beauties were shown. On the evening of February 10, 1901, intrigued by the Capitoline discussions and journalistic controversies, a large crowd of people had gathered around the fence that the Municipality had not yet decided to tear down, despite the fact that the work had been completed for several days. Tired of poking through the cracks, someone began to climb over, others to unpin the planking, until encouraging each other, amid a general confusion the fence was completely knocked down. In a great hurry, in the meantime, Rutelli himself (who is very likely not a stranger to that matter) had gone to call from the nearby Quirinale hotel, so that he could attend that improvised inauguration of his "drunk ciociare” ("Ciociaria" is the area from which the models posing for the artist came from). The day after the newspaper "La Capitale" wrote: "But as it usually happens in cases where the wait is great and certainly does not correspond to the reality of things, the sculptures of the fountains did not make any face blush, nor did they excessively excite the senses of altar boys of the basilica opposite who honored the unique inauguration with their presence ". In the following days, Queen Margaret also registered among the illustrious visitors: the echo of the controversies had aroused her curiosity. Arriving in the carriage she ordered the coachman to go around the fountain three times and left again showing a lively satisfaction.
