On one of my last days in Ubud, weaving through town on my scooter, I stumbled upon a temple ceremony. Hundreds of people sat gathered on the ground around the village temple, dressed in their finest ceremonial lace.
I raced home to grab my camera and hurried back, only just catching the tail end as everyone began to pack up and head home, streaming past me and my lens in what felt very much like a procession.
Women in delicate, coloured lace and batik outfits balanced baskets of fruit and offerings on their heads. I could hardly believe what I was witnessing. It was one of the most beautiful scenes I’ve seen on the road.
In case you missed it, last week I published my first ever Ubud guide, hoping to help you find a slower, more grounded, authentic Ubud through this collection of places I’ve come to know over decades, chosen with care for ownership, cultural preservation, and the people who live and work here.
This one’s free to read, let me know your thoughts and if you’re heading over soon!
