Things that will shock you in Rome as an American:🇺🇸🇮🇹

• Don’t expect giant cups of ice water. Drinks are usually served colder than room temperature, but nowhere near the Arctic levels many Americans are used to.
• Many local businesses pause in the middle of the day. Afternoon breaks are still part of daily life, so planning ahead can save you a wasted trip.
• At restaurants, no one is rushing you out. Your table is yours until you’re ready to leave, so you’ll need to ask for the bill when the meal is over.
• When crossing the street, and there are white stripes on the ground, you can cross even if there’s no light. We recommend you ALWAYS make eye contact with car drivers and motorists BEFORE crossing the street.
• Coffee culture moves fast. A quick espresso at the counter is often the norm.
• Romans are expressive, social, and energetic. Conversations are animated, people stand closer, and life feels a little more connected.
