🇬🇧 On the Celium Hill stands the military hospital linked to one of the most infamous escapes in postwar Italy.
In 1977, N**i officer Herbert Kappler, responsible for the Ardeatine massacre, escaped from this hospital hidden inside a suitcase pushed by his wife. 🧳
A story that still feels unbelievable today — and another reminder that Rome’s streets hold layers of history far beyond the ancient world.

🇮🇹 Sul colle Celio si trova l’ospedale militare legato a una delle fughe più clamorose dell’Italia del dopoguerra.
Nel 1977 il gerarca nazista Herbert Kappler, responsabile dell’eccidio delle Fosse Ardeatine, riuscì a fuggire da questo ospedale nascosto in una valigia spinta dalla moglie. 🧳
Una vicenda che ancora oggi sembra incredibile, e che ricorda come Roma custodisca storie ben oltre l’antichità.

It belonged to Eurysaces the Baker, a former slave who became incredibly wealthy through his bakery business. The strange cylindrical shapes decorating the monument are believed to represent bread ovens or containers used for kneading dough. A powerful reminder that even someone born a slave could rise to success in ancient Rome.

Apparteneva a Eurysaces il panettiere, uno schiavo liberato che riuscì a diventare molto ricco grazie alla sua attività di fornaio. Le strane forme cilindriche che decorano il monumento rappresenterebbero forni o contenitori usati per impastare il pane. Una testimonianza sorprendente di come anche uno schiavo potesse raggiungere il successo nell’antica Roma.

On July 19, 1943, this neighborhood was heavily bombed, leaving behind destroyed homes and broken streets. Some facades were never fully restored — and today, the damaged walls remain as silent witnesses of that day. Walking here isn’t just a stroll through Rome, but through memory.

🇮🇹 A San Lorenzo, alcuni palazzi portano ancora i segni della Seconda Guerra Mondiale.
Il 19 luglio 1943 il quartiere fu duramente bombardato, lasciando case distrutte e strade devastate. Alcune facciate non sono mai state completamente restaurate — e oggi quei muri feriti sono testimonianze silenziose di quel giorno. Passeggiare qui non è solo attraversare Roma, ma attraversare la memoria.
