High on a mountaintop sits the ancient city of Gerace, located in the region of Calabria, Italy. It was once the site of a Roman military Garrison. From here the sea is visible. I walked the cobblestone streets, visited the beautiful shoppes and the Cathedral...and of course, savored the delicious Granita which is a famous specialty here. My friend Antonio delighted in showing me his magnificent homeland. Grazie!

It is bittersweet as I make my way from my Italy home to my Oregon home. What a beautiful country this is...with such warm lovely people...I have such wonderful memories. I am so very grateful for all of it. I am feeling particularly happy that I drove from Pulgia to the center of Rome today and drove straight to the hotel I am staying at; The Hotel Tirreno. I was very nervous because of the reputation Rome has for scary driving. I now feel like I overcame a huge hurdle. Yesterday I drove about three hours from Matera to Pompeii to where I am now. The city is buzzing with the anticipated first visit of the beloved Pope Francis, who will be arriving by helicopter tomorrow morning. He will visit the Pontifical Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary of Pomeii shown here. I will join in the crowds at the piazza early in the morning for the celebration. Photos will be posted!

So the countdown begins...52 days until I am back in Southern Italy. I am over the top excited to begin this journey. It hardly seems real that the time is nearly here for another amazing adventure. I will be spending my time in Italy expanding my knowledge of the region and the language so that I may better serve those of you wanting to have an extraordinary, memorable Southern Italian experience. I look forward to offering travelers an authentic and memorable experience which transcends the heart and soul of this beautiful place to the visitor. I will be posting on this site and also on my blog as things draw closer. I look forward to taking you all on this journey with me.
Shown here is the Basilica di Santa Croce in Lecce, Italy. The baroque church dates back to the 1549. Lecce is known as the "Florence of the South." This church is just one of the many offerings this gem of a city has to offer. I can't wait to get back there to walk the beautiful narrow streets filled with artisans making and selling their crafts, the cafes and restaurants and of course the wonderful cooking school right in the middle of Lecce. Looking forward to taking you with me!
