Today we’re learning about the beautiful 17th century Ponte dei Sospiri in , a baroque bridge which connects the Palazzo Ducale to the Prigioni Nuove. It’s made of white Istrian stone and was used to lead prisoners from the interrogation rooms to the prison cells and vice versa through two separate corridors. In fact, the bridge was named the Bridge of Sighs (Ponte dei Sospiri), because of the melancholic sighs the convicts would let out when catching their last glimpse of freedom through the stone barred windows on their way to their cells.
Today, this landmark holds a more tradition, as couples who kiss on a ride under the bridge at sunset are said to last forever 🇮🇹
