A peculiarly Roman institution was the forum. During the Regal period, fora were marketplaces dedicated to certain products. The Forum Boarium, near the docks on the Tiber, was the place to buy and sell livestock. If you wished to purchase herbs and vegetable, you would go to the Forum Holitorium. Fish were sold at the Forum Piscarium. Pork, a Roman staple, was sold at the Forum Suarium and wine at the Forum Vinarium. Roofed marketplaces were known as macella. Many fora and macella existed throughout the city and its environs, but most have vanished. www.chi-rhogroup.com

At the time of Constantine’s victory at the Milvian Bridge, his predecessor Maxentius had recently completed construction of a new circus on the outskirts of Roma. To decorate the spina, Maxentius removed an obelisk from the Temple of Serapis in the Campus Martius to his new hippodrome. This obelisk had been commissioned by the Emperor Domitian many years before and was not an authentic Egyptian obelisk, but rather a Roman copy. In 1649, the Agonalis Obelisk was moved to the Piazza Navona. Bernini also designed the Fountain of Four Rivers to serve as the pedestal for the obelisk. www.chi-rhogroup.com

The Circus Maximus had its beginnings under the Tarquin kings as a dirt racecourse through some marshy agricultural lands situated between the Aventine and Palatine hills. Wooden stands for spectators were installed along sections of the track during the Republican era as the races became more competitive and more renown. Several improvements were made under the Dictator Julius Caesar, although the wooden stands were subject to fires from time to time and the track itself prone to flooding during storms. An obelisk and shrines dedicated to the deities were placed on the spina by the Emperor Augustus. Claudius made improvements to the drainage of the area around the Circus. The stands were rebuilt in stone under Trajan. Parts of the stands had collapsed during the Crisis of the Third Century and were rebuilt by Diocletian and the Tetrarchs. At peak capacity, the Circus Maximus could seat between 150,000 and 200,000 wildly cheering spectators. The primary attraction was the chariot races. At the time of Constantine’s entry into Roma, the Circus Maximus and its chariot races were famous throughout the empire. Many other hippodromes were built by the Romans, but the Circus Maximus remained the largest and most luxurious. Today it is a wide park in the center of the city. www.chi-rhogroup.com
