Using Public Transport in Rome

As many Romans know (and proudly say!), the fastest way around our Eternal City is often by train or metro. Underneath our feet lie centuries of history: every time they start digging, they unearth priceless finds. Remember: only about 30 % of ancient Rome has been excavated—so you can imagine what’s hidden below!

Attached you’ll find maps of Rome’s train, subway and tram networks, with all the stops clearly marked. Unfortunately, compared to other big European capitals, Rome has fewer underground lines—but that’s perfectly understandable when you consider our rich archaeological heritage.

Arriving at Fiumicino: What You Need to Know
Travel often means bringing luggage. The best advice — tried and true — is to travel as light as possible. However, if you do have checked baggage, here’s what to expect upon arrival at Rome’s Fiumicino Airport (Leonardo da Vinci).

Fiumicino is divided into two main terminals:

Terminal 1: for domestic and Schengen (European) flights,

Terminal 3: for international and intercontinental flights.

Terminal 1 has two separate exits: one for passengers without checked luggage, and another for those collecting bags.
Inform your transfer company if you have or not luggage and follow the visual instructions, meeting you will be easier
This is why it’s very helpful to inform your driver or transfer company whether or not you have checked luggage, so they know exactly where to wait for you.

After Landing: What Happens?
Here’s the typical process:
Disembark → Shuttle → Passport and customs → Baggage claim

Passport control is usually not required for flights arriving at Terminal 1 (domestic or Schengen).

After passport control, check the airport displays to find out which belt your luggage will arrive on.

Bags typically arrive within 40 minutes of landing.

If they don’t show up by then, don’t wait too long: go directly to your airline’s baggage service desk.

Special items such as strollers, wheelchairs, or musical instruments may be delivered on dedicated belts, so check the monitors carefully or ask for assistance.
Message your driver or transfer service as soon as you land, especially if there are delays with baggage. It’s a simple gesture that’s always greatly appreciated.

No need to ask where the best one is or which is our favorite – locals don’t live in the city center, and all of us have our own little neighborhood café. The best suggestion? Follow your nose – if they’ve just come out of the oven, you’ll smell them, and if they’re fresh, they’ll be tall and puffy.

Campo de’ Fiori / Jewish Ghetto
Looking for a place in Rome where you can explore history and enjoy amazing food?
Campo de’ Fiori and the nearby Jewish Ghetto are great stops for a few hours — perfect for a transfer with a stopover or before heading to your hotel or the port.

In the morning, Campo is an open-air market (Monday to Saturday), full of local fruits, flowers, spices, and Roman chatter.
🍸 In the evening, it becomes a lively square with lots of bars and restaurants.
Just 5 minutes away, the Jewish Ghetto is quieter, more historic — and home to some of the city’s most famous traditional dishes.
