Capo di Bove is an interesting archeological site on the Appian Way (number 222) on the outskirts of Rome few meters away from the Mausoleum of Cecilia Metella. It’s open every day from 10.00am till 4.00pm (it closes at 6.00pm on Sundays) and it’s free of charge.
You can admire the remains of the thermal baths of a vast property unearthed in 2 excavations campaigns, between 2002 and 2004, after the villa was acquired by the Italian state, and open to the public in 2006.
The property contains a main villa built over the remains of one of the 2 cisterns supplying water to the thermal complex, the ruins of the thermal baths and a garden of 8.550 square meters.
The thermal baths date back to the middle of the 2nd century and were used until at least the 4th century. They are believed to belong to the large estate of Herodes Atticus and his wife Annia Regilla. A wonderful inscription found there mentions Anna Regilla as “the light of the house”
There are several well-preserved white and black tesserae mosaics, and the usual rooms to be found in Roman baths, i.e. a caldarium (hot bath), tepidarium (warm bath) and frigidarium (cold bath) can be easily seen. The building materials employed were of high quality.
Water was provided by two large cisterns: the one below the villa has imposing measures: 35meters long, 2.40 meters wide and 2.35 meters high.
