🏛️ Roman Mosaics: Ancient Art Built to Last

Roman mosaics were created by arranging thousands of tiny pieces of stone, marble, glass, or ceramics, called tesserae, into intricate patterns and images.

The process began with several layers of mortar to create a strong foundation. Artists then sketched the design and carefully pressed each tessera into the wet surface. Different colors and materials were used to create shading, depth, and remarkable detail. Once complete, the surface was polished to produce a durable work of art.

Mosaics decorated the floors and walls of villas, baths, temples, and public buildings throughout the Roman Empire. They often depicted mythology, hunting scenes, marine life, gladiators, and everyday Roman activities. Like this one here at Ostia Antica.

More than just decoration, mosaics reflected the wealth, tastes, and beliefs of their owners. Because many were buried and protected for centuries, they remain one of the richest sources of information about life in the ancient Roman world.

Buona Festa della Repubblica! 🇮🇹

Today we celebrate 2 June 1946, the day Italians voted to establish the Republic and shape the future of the nation.

Today there will be a parade, a ceremony, a fly past and the Italian flag decorating the Colosseum!
