On Tuesday's tour of Ostia Antica we had the pleasure of meeting 11 year old Eva...a young historian in the making. Her passion for Ostia Antica was thanks to having read all of the books in The Roman Mysteries series which are set in this Roman port city. If you have young ones (or older ones!) and are planning a trip to Ostia why not read these ahead of time to whet their appetite!

The low water level of the River Tiber has revealed the remains of Nero's Bridge. Originally built by Emperor Caligula around 39 AD it was later renamed by Emperor Nero himself. This first century, rare sight can be seen from Ponte Vittorio Emanuele II near Castel Sant'Angelo. Have you seen it yet?

We think these are four of Rome's most underrated museums that many tourists miss when they visit Rome.....

📍Palazzo Massimo - Near Termini. This museum is jam packed with beautiful frescoes, mosaics and famous statues.

📍Palazzo Altemps - Near Piazza Navona. The Building itself is an attraction at this centrally located museum. The highlight is definitely the beautiful loggia.

📍 Trajan's Market - Near Piazza Venezia. Here you can wander the ancient Roman streets, weave in and out of shops and then explore the museum with many artefacts from the surrounding forum.

📍Centrale Montemartini - Near Basilica San Paolo. This lesser known museum houses many incredible marble statues in an old power plant.

The Dolce Vita ("the sweet life") was a glamorous period in Rome during the 50s and 60s, when the city became an international playground for movie stars, artists, aristocrats, and the wealthy. Much of this excitement centred on Via Veneto, a fashionable street lined with luxury hotels, elegant cafés, and exclusive restaurants.
Following the Second World War, Hollywood studios began filming major productions in Rome, earning the city the nickname “Hollywood on the Tiber." Stars such as Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Anita Ekberg, and Marcello Mastroianni filled the streets, attracting photographers and journalists eager for the latest celebrity gossip. These photographers became known as paparazzi, a word made famous by La Dolce Vita, directed by Federico Fellini.

Among the most famous meeting places was Café de Paris. Opened in 1956, it quickly became the place to see and be seen. Actors, royalty, politicians, and wealthy visitors would gather on its terrace to enjoy coffee, cocktails, and conversation while watching the fashionable crowds stroll along Via Veneto.
The café became an icon of the Dolce Vita lifestyle, symbolising elegance, luxury, and celebrity culture. However, its history also reflects a darker side. In the 2000s, it was discovered that the business had been infiltrated by organised crime and was seized by the Italian authorities. It remains a landmark on Via Veneto and a reminder of one of Rome's most glamorous eras. Now all shuttered up you can peek through the windows and see a snapshot of that glamorous era!
For visitors today, Via Veneto is quieter than it was in the 60s, but walking along the street still evokes the atmosphere of a time when Rome was considered the capital of style, cinema, and the Dolce Vita.

The clients on yesterday's Jewish Ghetto and Trastevere tour had the rare privilege of meeting the legendary Emanuele Di Porto.

At one of the stops on this fascinating walking tour your guide tells you about the terrible events of October 16th 1943, when the N***s rounded up and deported over 1,000 Jews. On that day Emanuele was 12 years old and he witnessed this harrowing event. His mother pushed him off one of the N**i trucks, distraught, he fled and took refuge on a tram for 3 days. The tram drivers hid him and fed him and as a result he avoided deportation.

Incredibly, Emanuele is still alive and living in the same house in the heart of the Ghetto. At the age of 95 years old he told us yesterday of how he has 70 steps to climb to his apartment. He was a joy to chat with and it was a special moment for both the clients and Rebecca the guide.
