If you step inside Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore and look up…
…you’ll see some of the earliest surviving Christian mosaics in Rome, dating back to the 5th century. Lining the nave, these shimmering scenes depict stories from the Old Testament and were created during the basilica’s original construction under Pope Sixtus III.
Just above the altar, the apse mosaic adds another layer, a 13th-century depiction of the Coronation of the Virgin that reflects the church’s deep connection to Mary.
It’s one of those rare places where centuries of art and history exist side by side, quietly telling the story of Rome ⛪✨
