If you step inside Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore and look up…

…you’ll see some of the earliest surviving Christian mosaics in Rome, dating back to the 5th century. Lining the nave, these shimmering scenes depict stories from the Old Testament and were created during the basilica’s original construction under Pope Sixtus III.

Just above the altar, the apse mosaic adds another layer, a 13th-century depiction of the Coronation of the Virgin that reflects the church’s deep connection to Mary.

It’s one of those rare places where centuries of art and history exist side by side, quietly telling the story of Rome ⛪✨

Did you know the islands of Murano and Burano are still home to centuries-old traditions of glassmaking and lace-making? ✨

Just beyond Venice, these lagoon islands have long been tied to the city’s history. Murano became the center of glass production in the 13th century, when furnaces were moved there to reduce fire risk in Venice, while Burano developed a reputation for its intricate handmade lace, prized across Europe.

If you have extra time in Venice, visiting Murano and Burano offers a completely different perspective and a chance to immerse yourself in the historic traditions that have shaped Venetian culture for centuries.

Most people arrive at the Vatican underground, in a taxi, or shoulder-to-shoulder with the crowds. But there’s a quieter way 🌿

Tucked behind Roma San Pietro station is the Passeggiata del Gelsomino, a pedestrian walkway created from part of the old Vatican railway line established after the Lateran Pacts of 1929. Today, the tracks are gone, replaced by a peaceful path lined with jasmine and framed by unexpected views of St. Peter’s dome.

One detail most people don’t realize: Vatican City still has its own railway system — technically the shortest national railway in the world. Part of that historic route now lives on as this elevated walk above the streets of Rome.

It’s not a major landmark. There are no ticket lines or grand entrances. Just a slower, quieter approach to one of the most visited places in the world ✨

Did you know there’s a skeleton holding an hourglass inside St. Peter’s Basilica? 💀⏳

The monument to Pope Alexander VII was designed in the 17th century by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, and it’s one of the most dramatic sculptures in the basilica. A life-sized skeleton emerges from beneath flowing marble drapery, holding an hourglass to symbolize time slipping away.

Look closely and you’ll notice the richly colored marble “fabric” cascading over a doorway, blending sculpture and architecture in a way that was groundbreaking for the Baroque period.

It’s one of those details most visitors walk right past, but once you see it, you won’t forget it.

📍 Find it inside St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City
