🏡 Ever wondered what it’s really like to rent a home in Italy?
Think less “move-in ready” and more “no kitchen, bring your lightbulbs.” 😅
In Italy, renting an apartment can feel like stepping into another world — one with no credit scores, long-term leases, and some of the most beautiful balconies you’ve ever seen.
It’s not always easy… but it’s absolutely worth it.
Would you ever rent long-term in Italy — or do you prefer to just visit?
🇮🇹 Renting in Italy vs. the U.S. 🇺🇸 — What No One Tells You
Renting an apartment in Italy looks simple… until it’s not.
Here’s what surprises most Americans when they start the search:
🔹 No credit score system — landlords look at job contracts, income, and your “serietà” (seriousness)
🔹 Unfurnished usually means completely empty — no fridge, no lights, sometimes not even a kitchen
🔹 Rental contracts are longer — often 3+ years (but there are short-term options if you know where to look)
🔹 Agencies charge both you AND the landlord — expect a fee equal to 1 month’s rent
🔹 You need a codice fiscale (Italian tax ID) even before signing
Want the good news? Rent can be way cheaper than in most U.S. cities — and with the right help, you can avoid the common traps.
I help Americans rent homes in Italy without getting lost in translation — literally!
