San Marco d’Alunzio: The Jewel of Sicily with a Rich History

San Marco d’Alunzio is a picturesque medieval village in Sicily, located in the Metropolitan City of Messina, about 120 km east of Palermo and 80 km west of Messina. It is recognized as one of the “Most Beautiful Villages in Italy.”

A History Intertwined with Ancient Greece

San Marco d’Alunzio (Messina) first appeared in the 4th century BC under Greek rule and was known as Alontion. During the Greek period, Alontion was a flourishing center, renowned for its economic and cultural development, and even minted its own coins. Later, during the Punic Wars, it was conquered by the Romans, who declared it an autonomous municipium and renamed it Aluntium. The city continued to prosper during the Roman era, as evidenced by the archaeological monuments and inscriptions discovered in the area.

Historical Evolution

After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, Aluntium was taken over by the Byzantines and renamed Demenna. It was later occupied by the Arabs, who fortified the town with walls, and then by the Normans, who conquered it in the 11th century and renamed it San Marco.

Today, the village preserves a rich cultural heritage, with more than 20 churches — including the Church of Saint Mark — as well as the Norman Castle, which dominates the hilltop. Also remarkable are the ruins of the Temple of Hercules, dating back to the 4th century BC. The historical connection between San Marco d’Alunzio and Greece remains an integral part of its identity, offering unique opportunities for cultural and tourism development.

Filippo Miracula, the Mayor of San Marco d’Alunzio, is actively working to revive a thriving economy in this historic Sicilian village.

Ben’s Review 28/06/2025 - La Collina dei Nebrodi is a truly unforgettable place. The location is stunning and perfectly highlights the impeccable beauty of the land itself. The villa is situated amongst the rolling highs of Nebrodi Park with an absolutely incredible view of San Marco and the Tyrrhenian Sea. You’re surrounded by the sounds of nature for your entire stay, which made this trip truly serene.
Upon arrival, we were greeted warmly by Claudia and her family, along with their sweet border collie Ciccio (whose lovely company was hands down a highlight of the trip!). The villa itself was beyond expectations, and comfortably fit our family of 10 with plenty of room to spare. The spectacular pool, various hiking trails, and outdoor eating/sitting areas were all highlights for our family. It’s as if Claudia and her family thought of everything anyone might need for a fabulous stay!
What makes La Collina dei Nebrodi special, though, is Claudia and her family. Their brilliance and warmth were spectacularly touching. None of us had ever been to Sicily before, and to experience it like this, surrounded by such beauty and such kindness, made it unforgettable. We absolutely adored spending our mornings with Alessio, who was not only a brilliant and amazing chef, but always so cheerful and kindhearted throughout the entire stay. We will miss his laughter! Co. and St., who drove us around, were so flexible, inviting, hilarious, and incredibly skilled on those mountain roads! And then, of course, is Claudia, whose professionalism, attentiveness, and genuine kindness are completely beyond words. Claudia and her parents, Gisella and Sergio, are truly some of the most special people we have ever met. They not only managed last minute changes and additions swiftly, but also provided additional recommendations and suggestions that made our trip personalized and special. I wish a review could do them justice, but it can’t – you will just have to stay at the villa to see for yourself!
We laughed, we drank their amazing house wine, we dined on their personally prepared traditional meals, and we left feeling like we’d just been a part of something truly unique.
