This past Saturday, Amoria Journeys was honored to sponsor the Millay Arts fundraiser — a beautiful afternoon of community, creativity, and connection. Guests enjoyed a special wine tasting with Tenuta Torciano Winery from San Gimignano, Tuscany, hosted at the always-welcoming Amici Restaurant in Stockbridge, MA.

In support of Millay Arts and their mission to nurture artists with residences, I was thrilled to donate two spots on my September Harvest in Tuscany tour, along with a private trip planning session, to the event’s auction.

It brings me so much joy to share the beauty of Italy while supporting such a meaningful cause.

Grazie to everyone who came out, bid generously, and raised a glass with us! I can’t wait to welcome the auction winners to Tuscany this fall for an unforgettable harvest season.

Buon Compleanno, Italia! Happy 164th Birthday, Italy!

On this day, March 17, in 1861, King Vittorio Emanuele II (1820-1878) of Sardinia became the first King of united Italy since the 6th century.

Born in Turin as the eldest son of Charles Albert, Prince of Carignano, and Maria Theresa of Austria, he fought in the First Italian War of Independence (1848-49) before being made King of Piedmont-Sardinia following his father's abdication. He appointed Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour, as his Prime Minister, and he consolidated his position by suppressing the republican left.

Vittorio Emanuele supported the Expedition of the Thousand (1860–1861) led by Giuseppe Garibaldi, which resulted in the rapid fall of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies in Southern Italy. However, Victor Emmanuel halted Garibaldi when he appeared ready to attack Rome, still under the Papal States, as it was under French protection. In 1860, Tuscany, Modena, Parma and Romagna decided to side with Sardinia-Piedmont, and Vittorio Emanuele then marched victoriously in the Marche and Umbria after the victorious battle of Castelfidardo over the Papal forces. He subsequently met Garibaldi at Teano, receiving from him the control of southern Italy and becoming the first King of Italy.

In 1866, the Third Italian War of Independence allowed Italy to annex Veneto. In 1870, Victor Emmanuel also took advantage of the Prussian victory over France in the Franco-Prussian War to taking over the Papal States after the French withdrew. He entered Rome on September 20, 1870 and set up the new capital there on July 2, 1871. He died in Rome in 1878, and was buried in the Pantheon.

The Italian national Vittorio Emanuele II monument in Rome, containing the Altare della Patria, was built in his honor.

And so March 17, 1861 marks the birthdate of the modern day Italy that we know today.

Buona Festa della Donna! 💛💐 Happy International Women's Day!

In Italy, women receive a yellow mimosa flower. The flowers serve as a token of appreciation and as an expression of female solidarity. In 1945 the Union of Italian Women declared March 8 a special holiday to celebrate womanhood across the country.

Also across the country, many bars and restaurants offer special pricing and menus for women and flower stands selling mimosa flowers are set up around the cities.

Auguri a tutte le donne!

Step Inside Siena’s Most Famous Square: Piazza del Campo

This piazza is famous for hosting the Palio di Siena—check out my previous post to learn more about this historic horse race!

Other key features of this piazza include:
• Palazzo Pubblico: the gothic town hall
• Torre del Mangia: a tall tower with excellent views
• Fonte Gaia: a beautiful fountain, originally completed in 1419 by Jacopo della Quercia
• Surrounding buildings: including residential homes and various palaces that were once the homes of Siena’s noble families.

The piazza’s unique design and cultural significance make it a UNESCO World Heritage site and a popular destination for tourists and historians alike.

“❤️” if you learned something :)
Comment “🙌🏻” if you’ve been before!

And if you’ve never been to Italy before…well, what are you waiting for?

🐷 Il Porcellino (“The Little Pig”) is not a pig! It’s actually a wild boar, and it was originally sculpted by Pietro Tacca in the 17th century.

🐗 The current bronze statue is a replica, with the original housed in the Museo Bardini.

💼 Il Porcellino is located in the Mercato Nuovo (New Market), also known as the Straw Market, in the historic center of Florence.

🪙 THE LORE: According to local tradition, placing a coin in the boar’s mouth and letting it fall into the grate below will bring good luck. If the coin falls through the grate, it is said that you will return to Florence one day.

✨Additionally, rubbing the boar’s snout is believed to ensure good fortune, which is why the snout is polished and shiny from the touch of countless visitors.

Have you ever rubbed Il Porcellino’s snout? Did it work?
👀

Like and comment on this post for good luck! 🍀

Want to rub Il Porcellino’s nose for good fortune? You can on my Harvest in Tuscany tour this September 🇮🇹

🇮🇹 The Ponte Vecchio, meaning “Old Bridge,” is one of Florence’s most iconic landmarks and one of the most famous bridges in the world.

🧱 The bridge seen today was built in 1345 after the previous structure, constructed in Roman times, was destroyed by a flood.

🛍️ Unlike typical bridges, The Pointe Vecchio is lined with shops, a tradition that dates back centuries.

🐟 Initially, the shops on the bridge were occupied by butchers, tanners, and fishmongers.

💎 However, due to the stench and waste they produced, Duke Ferdinand I decreed in 1593 that only goldsmiths and jewelers could set up shop on the bridge.

💍 This tradition continues today, and the Ponte Vecchio is renowned for its luxurious jewelry stores.

The Ponte Vecchio is more than just a bridge; it’s a living piece of history and a vibrant part of Florence’s cultural and economic life.

Check out my upcoming Harvest in Tuscany tour to walk The Ponte Vecchio yourself and be transported back in time… 🚶‍♀️
