Rose bushes are a beauty to behold in vineyards 🌹

Why do we often see rose bushes planted at the end of vine rows?

It has been argued that:

⚘ Rose bushes are sensitive to the same diseases as grapevines and show signs of these diseases earlier.
⚘ Rose bushes provide indicators of the overall health of the vineyard's ecosystem.
⚘ The color of the roses helps remind farmers of the grape variety planted.
-⚘ Thorny roses teach horses not to get too close when vineyards were still managed using horses and plows.

However, research has found that the above claims are not true:

📌 Grapes and roses have different soil and fertilizer needs.
📌 Even though both plants may be sensitive to diseases like downy and powdery mildew, the fungi that affect roses differ entirely from those that attack grapevines.
📌 Researchers recommend planting low-maintenance plants near vines instead of roses, which require a lot of water and fertilizer.
📌 Additionally, if you are using horses for biodynamic vineyard management, training them to make wider turns is advisable.

Still, roses do add beautiful color to vineyards.

Perché vediamo spesso cespugli di rose piantati all'estremità dei filari di vite?

Si sostiene che:

⚘ Le rose sono sensibili alle stesse malattie della vite e mostrano i segni di queste malattie prima.
⚘ Le rose forniscono indicatori della salute generale dell'ecosistema del vigneto.
⚘ Il colore delle rose aiuta a ricordare agli agricoltori il vitigno piantato.
⚘ Le rose spinose insegnano ai cavalli a non avvicinarsi troppo quando ancora le vigne venivano gestite con cavalli e aratri.

Tuttavia, la ricerca ha scoperto che le affermazioni di cui sopra non sono vere:
📌 L'uva e le rose hanno esigenze diverse di terreno e fertilizzanti.
📌 Anche se entrambe le piante possono essere sensibili a malattie come la peronospora e l'oidio, i funghi che colpiscono le rose sono completamente diversi.
📌 I ricercatori consigliano di piantare piante a bassa manutenzione vicino alle viti invece che alle rose, che richiedono molta acqua e fertilizzanti.
📌 Inoltre, se si utilizzano cavalli per la gestione biodinamica del vigneto, è consigliabile addestrarli a fare curve più ampie.
