Tartufo means “truffle” in Italian referring to its shape and coating. It is considered PGI (protected geographical indication) to affirm its place of origin. How it’s made: a scoop of one gelato flavor is flattened and a center (like a cherry or chocolate) is placed in the middle. Another scoop of a different gelato flavor is then used to completely cover the first scoop, forming a ball. The ball is frozen until firm. Final step is coating it in a chocolate shell and rolled in cocoa powder, chopped nuts, or chocolate crumbs. It’s delicious and molto Calabrese! It is delicious!

Holy Week (Settimana Santa) in the town of Polistena (Πολυξένη), Calabria. This week is a profound expression of faith featuring ancient traditions and rituals including Good Friday processions carrying statues of the Passion and deeply emotional community-led reenactments of Christ’s burial and resurrection.

This image is from 2010 and shows a rich red hue used over 2,000 years ago. This piece was excavated in the ancient town of Taureanum (located between current day Palmi and Gioia Tauro, RC) where Roman villas once glowed with pigment made from earth and fire. Most likely part of a fresco wall. Taureanum was a Roman coastal settlement that sits along the Tyrrhenian coast, and that matters because trade routes connected it to Naples, Sicily, and North Africa. Pigments like cinnabar could be imported. This red hue that today is commonly referred to as “Pompeiian Red” followed Roman Mediterranean aesthetics.

Enjoying a cornetto and caffè in Calabria. A Cornetto is a sweet, horn-shaped pastry similar to a croissant but softer, sweeter, and less flaky, often made with eggs and sometimes lard instead of butter, and commonly filled with jam or cream or chocolate. Of course, like most Italian food, the cornetto is a hot debate with its origins. Some say Calabria, some even say Austria. Some even call it brioche but Calabrians call it “cornetto.” Whatever its linguistic or recipe origins, we enjoyed a pistacchio cream filled cornetto and it was divine and delicious and decadent for a breakfast meal but as the saying goes: WHEN IN ROME.

L’olmo di San Lorenzo (RC), is a rare, age-old elm tree representing the town’s heritage. It is just one of many monumental trees (aka ancient trees) throughout the region. Quite a few of these monumental trees are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Its historical-cultural value is profound and represents not only the Byzantine town of San Lorenzo but also Calabria’s rich agricultural past and present. Sadly, the town is grieving the loss of this rare botanical beauty reminding us all how fragile our bond truly is with our natural environment.

My parents would always say “mo vidimu” when we asked about something we were waiting for with anticipation. For example: What’s taking so long? We’ve been waiting 20 minutes. MO VIDIMU!

The Doric column standing on Capo Colonna is the last visible remnant of the ancient Temple of Hera Lacinia, one of the most important Greek sanctuaries in Magna Graecia. The original structure was a temple, built around the 5th century BC, once had many columns (about 48) surrounding the sanctuary platform. Located on the Ionian coast in the province of Crotone, this solitary column is not just an architectural fragment—it represents:
• The former grandeur of the Hera sanctuary.
• The layered history of Greek and Roman Calabria.
Capo Colonna evolved from a major Greek sanctuary to a Roman colony, later a medieval landmark, and today stands as one of Calabria’s most symbolic archaeological sites overlooking the Ionian Sea as it has been for over 2,500 years.

Inside La Cattolica contains an upside-down column, with an inverted Corinthian capital on the floor. This architectural oddity gives us a hint that many reused materials were used to build the church, and the inverted column may have been brought here from the nearby ruins of the ancient city of Kaulon.

Greek-Byzantine fresco detail of saints and apostles painted on the walls represent the communion of believers and the continuity of the Church inside La Cattolica located in Stilo. Depiction is mainly theological and symbolic rather than narrative like later western renaissance art.
