FERENTILLO - The mystery of the Mummies

From the 16th century onwards, all the departed of the small village of Ferentillo in Valnerina were buried in the crypt below the church of Santo Stefano - wich is located on the side of the small town called “Precetto”- until the enactment of Saint Cloud’s Napoleonic Edict called "Décret Impérial sur les sépultures" extended to Italy in 1806, that forbade any burial within the city walls. In addition to banning the burial it was ordered to exhume all the bodies inside the crypt, and only then came the sensational discovery ... the exhumed individuals were completely mummified. All those who were buried in the small crypt between the 16th century and 1806 were perfectly preserved. The bodies were like dried, but still kept intact skin, nails, hair, beard, teeth and even clothes. Since then, over the original entrance of the crypt, heads an ominous and creepy inscription:

FERENTILLO - Il mistero delle Mummie

Tutti i defunti del piccolo Borgo di Ferentillo in Valnerina, dal XVI sec. in poi vennero inumati nella cripta sottostante la chiesa di Santo Stefano situata nella parte di paese chiamata Precetto , fino a quando l'emanazione dell'Editto napoleonico di Saint Cloud “Décret Impérial sur les Sépultures” , esteso all'Italia nel 1806 , vietò qualsiasi sepoltura all'interno delle mura cittadine. Oltre a vietarne la sepoltura fu ordinata la riesumazione dei corpi e all'interno della cripta , solo in quel momento avvenne la sensazionale scoperta... gli individui esumati erano completamente mummificati. Tutti coloro che vennero sepolti nella piccola cripta tra il XVI secolo e il 1806, erao perfettamente conservati. I corpi erano come essiccati, ma conservavano ancora intatti pelle,unghie, peli, capelli, barba, denti e persino gli abiti. Da allora, sopra l’ingresso originale della cripta, capeggia una scritta inquietante:

BEVAGNA - La Cartiera

Ogni anno in giugno, una piccola cittadina Umbra di nome Bevagna, torna per dieci giorni a vivere nel XIII secolo. In questo periodo la città si divide in quattro contrade, dette Gaite. I cittadinbi si vestiranno, mangeranno e parleranno come si faceva in quel periodo. La competizione tra le Gaite è fortissima, e il duello conclusivo si tiene con arco e frecce. Il mercato delle Gaite è soprattutto un'opportunità di compiere un incredibile viaggio nel tempo per scoprire gli antichi mestieri medievali. Un tuffo nel passato per vedere dal vivo tecniche e strumenti di lavoro all’interno delle botteghe medievali di Bevagna, situate nel centro storico della città dove Maestri dell’arte ed esperti artigiani svelano i segreti degli Antichi Mestieri Medievali: Cartari, Ceraioli, Tessitori e Zecchieri mostrano le fasi e gli strumenti di lavoro della loro produzione, consentendo di conoscere e sperimentare i segreti dell’arte medievale.

ORVIETO - Saint Patrick's Well and the Irish Legend

There is a strong connection -or maybe more than one- between Umbria and Ireland. One of these, maybe the most important, is the one that refers to Saint Patrick and the well to Purgatory.
The original Irish legend, attested since the Middle Ages, is the legend linked to a deep cavern located on a small island of Lough Derg (Donegal). According to the legend, the cave was given by Christ to St. Patrick, who used to retire in prayer in the Island, so that he could show the pains of Hell to all the devotees who didn’t believe in it; they ventured up to reach the bottom, in return they would have received the remission of sins and access to Paradise. The cave was a place of pilgrimage until, in 1497, Pope Alexander VI imposed the closure of the cave and the destruction of the buildings on the island. It was reopened, not long after, and closed again in 1632 by Sir James Balfour and Sir James Stewart on behalf of the Irish Government. The cave was opened again for the third time in the reign of James II and closed for the last time in 1780.
In the Umbrian town of Orvieto an amazing place in the district of Terni, there is a Mysterious well, called Saint Patrick’s well.
Pope Clement VII returning from the sack of Rome decided to build this deep well to provide water to the city of Orvieto in times of siege. Orvieto stands on a high hill already impregnable and with the well, it finally became complitely unassailable. The well is about 62 meters High and 13 meters wide, it reaches the waters of the spring of S. Zeno. The project is to be attributed to Sangallo the Young, a genius in terms of architecture if we consider the complex structure of the well.
The well is surrounded by two independent double – helical stairs wich never intersect, and enlightened by 72 windows. This was made to facilitate and not to hinder those who went down to fetch water.
Going down the steps takes you into the unknown, into the depths of the earth, a long drive in the dark, where- in the end- you will come across the water, the source of life. For this reason it was not built brick by brick but digging directly into the bare earth, just as St. Patrick's cave.
