The Kitchen Tiles That Almost Didn't Happen
After ordering handmade terracotta tiles for the floor — custom-colored just for us — we began searching for the perfect backsplash. We were in a rush to finish renovations and needed something in stock, ready to ship.
First stop: Leroy Merlin. We found a lovely green tile and placed the order. Then we waited… One week. Two. Three. Nothing. The tiles never arrived.
We checked major stores across Italy — nothing available without a long wait. Custom artisanal tiles were tempting, but far too expensive and with a three-month lead time.
We were ready to give up.
Then a friend mentioned a mysterious warehouse near Todi — an open field filled with unsold tile leftovers, old stock, forgotten collections. It sounded like a long shot, but we had nothing to lose.
My husband jumped in the car. Hours later, he sent a video: an enormous, weed-filled lot with scattered crates, some collapsing from time and weather. It looked hopeless.
But then — magic.
Digging through brambles and broken boxes, he started pulling out handcrafted, glazed tiles exactly the size we needed. Each tile was unique, slightly uneven, each one touched by a human hand. The kind of beauty money can’t buy.
Piece by piece, he collected enough to tile our entire kitchen — a true treasure hunt.
He designed the layout and installed them himself. If you look closely, you’ll see every tile has its own shape, color variation, and soul. They bring warmth to our space — and a story worth telling.
