I am halfway through this show on Netflix - trying hard not to binge it but give myself time to truly soak it in!

The series is based on "Il Gattopardo" a historical novel written by Giuseppe Tommasi di Lampedusa and published in 1958.

The novel describes the transition the kingdom of Sicily endured when in the 1860s it joined the kingdom of Italy after being invaded by Garibaldi and his 1000 men on behalf of the Kingdom of Italy! It documents the slow transformation of the noble class, and the oppressed peasant class and the shift in power from the Kings and Princess of Sicily to the working class and a form of democracy.

In 1963 the novel was made into a movie, called Il Gattopardo, which is a true Italian Classic movie!

Netflix has turned the movie/book into a miniseries and thus far, I am enjoying it. The scenography is stunning and if you have visited Sicily, you can easily recognize parts of Palermo, the castle of Donnafugata, the coastline and so much more!

It may not be the most accurate rendition, but it is captivating. One of the stars' is Monica Bellucci's daughter, which is a neat little tidbit I did not realize right away. And it's a great way to get a glimpse into Sicily's complicated and often misunderstood history and culture.

On a personal note, watching this history unfold so vividly through a modern show, helps me to understand the Sicilian culture better! The class distinctions, the sufferings, the distrustfulness, and the determination and true grit, all stems from the unique history this beautiful island endured! The pieces are coming together!

Let me know what you think of this show!

A few weeks ago I got to play tour guide to this amazing guide (and friend) from Rome, Raffaella.

Should have brought my sunglasses 🤣

Had a wonderful day exploring la Valle del Belice - an area deeply affected by a devastating earthquake in 1968 that left deep scars despite the grit, tenacity and passion evident today! The best olive oil (Novellara del Belice) and prized wines come from this area. Contemporary art has replaced the demolished historical architectural heritage of the towns affected by the earthquake - the rolling hills kissed in sunlight provide a serenity no picture could ever capture.

You need to experience it - live it, breathe it feel it!

Cretto di Burri - the memorial "cement town" built to never forget - is the most surreal place I have ever visited. The sombre feelings it evokes mixed with the stunning landscape evokes melancholy feelings and a hopeful outlook.

Join me on my tour May 15-26! We will experience this amazing corner of Sicily together🧡

Often, I'm asked what the downside of living in Sicily is! My answer is usually evasive as I am fully aware that every place has amazing "pros" and a variety of "cons". As long as the pros outnumber the cons, I consider it a perfect place!

Today however, I had a strong reminder of one of the "cons" of living in Sicily! Anything bureaucratic is a nightmare! Especially if you have lived in an organized country and are used to a level of efficiency.

Today's events are purely for entertainment purposes!

I needed a copy of my son's emergency file from a recent hospital visit. I expected some complications but went into this task bright eyed and bushy tailed! The first issue was finding parking. This hospital is smack in the middle of a rather large city and the pay parking lot, for reasons unexplained, is closed. Winding down the narrowest streets in traffic, I eventually find a parking spot, albeit a bit frazzled.

I make my way to the records office. The staff was very friendly, and filled out my request and explained the fee. I pull out my cash to pay. The hospital does not accept payment. I must hike down 3 blocks to a shady gas station and pay it there (or take my car and find a post office and pray to get back by 12.15). I am willing to walk! But wait, this request only covers his admission to ER, for his x-rays, I need to hike to the other side of the hospital and submit another request.

I find the radiology's office with closed shutters. I realize someone is working behind the closed shutters and ring the bell. Another request and the same payment instructions.
I hike to the gas station and wait my turn patiently (unlike the other 4 people who cut in front of me). I pay 10 euros in hospital fees and 5 euros in processing fee to the gas station. I hike back to the hospital and bounce back and forth between departments until, magically at closing time (12.15pm),I am handed my files (after begging them for same day service).
This ordeal took 3hrs and my stress meter was high😂
Back in Canada, I had parked in the parking lot, filled out one request, paid on the spot in less than 20 min and picked up my file a few hours later.
Good thing wine is cheap😊

Geraci Siculo Is anchored by an incredible Hotel -
Donna Vi

Opened in 2022 it has 18 wonderful, modern, comfortable clean and spacious rooms. The breakfast has a great variety of sweet and savory. Ty loved the bacon, prosciutto and eggs. I loved the fresh made cakes and orange juice. The staff is very accommodating and friendly! Not pictured is a lounge area with a fireplace and tv where I had to eat a lot of humble pie after losing 3 checker matches in a row 😂

One of the best features the hotel offers is its spacious and wonderful spa! Maximum 7 couples can book the same 90 minute time slot - it includes a hot sauna, steam room, whirlpool bath tub and pool and endless tea. After a day of exploring the steep streets of Geraci Siculo on foot, the spa was simply wonderful. You can also book various massages etc.

Finally the restaurant: we thoroughly enjoyed our delicious dishes! The Busiata Is Amazing. Loved the ricotta on bitter greens (not pictured as I always forget to take pictures before devouring😬) and the appetizer platter is a great mix, including local honey!

Great wine selection too! As you can see the Sicilian Nero d'Avola is a fair bit darker than most reds (Shiraz in the pic). I love it! Bold and full bodied.

There is also a great bar where they mix wonderful drinks! Great location and Hotel. Very relaxing and fantastic value.

They also organize incredible excursions! Make your own fresh ricotta, explore the mountains with a guide, learn the history of the area and so much more.

Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions or would like to book the hotel stay and/or excursion.

Down the way, on the path that leads to the castle, you can fill your water bottle from a natural mountain spring (I was told it is very very old) and taste some of the freshest water ever!

Take a Sicilian mountain break! You won't regret it!! 💜

I fell in love with this little town! Just around 1000 inhabitants (depending on who you ask) and full of charme. Ancient meets old meets new. But the new adapts to fit in with the old, not the other way around!

From the castle you can stroll into town and get lost in these narrow alleyways designed for horses in which you could swear no vehicle could ever enter! But alas, not only small vehicles wedge their way in but also vendor trucks and dump trucks!

We strolled the alleyways seeing sign of life but only running into and greeting a few locals.

It's a great spot for those who enjoy walking, some steep walking, and the quietness of an ancient town with many stories to tell and incredible views!

The amazing doors of Geraci Siculo and there were so so many more amazing doors! It is such a charming, quiet town to just stroll through and soak in the scenery and narrow roads.

But the roads of Geraci Siculo deserve its own post!!
