It all started in 1826. On August 16, the Lario made its maiden voyage, becoming the first steamship to enter regular service on the lake. Just a few months later, on November 1, the Plinio joined the fleet.
These early steamships were very different from the ones we know today: wooden hulls, large side paddle wheels, and a top speed of around 11 km/h. Journeys between the various towns of the lake could take several hours and, in the early days, even required passengers to transfer between vessels using small rowing boats.
But what seemed like a simple innovation in transportation would change the lake forever.
During the second half of the 19th century, new navigation companies appeared, along with iron-hulled vessels and increasingly modern steamships.
With the development of the railway, Lake Como became an increasingly popular destination for international tourism. Steamships were no longer simply a means of transportation: they became elegant floating spaces where people could travel, socialize and enjoy the scenery.
✨ The early 20th century brought some of the lake’s most famous vessels; Milano (1904), Patria (1926) and Concordia (1926).
Wars, technological advances and the transition from paddle wheels to engines gradually transformed navigation on the lake.
And yet, some of those historic vessels have remained part of its collective memory.
🔥 The Concordia, still associated with its historic steam engine, is one of the most fascinating surviving reminders of that era.
