The Franciscan Friars (vulgar: "Frari") came to Venice in 1222, but had no permanent home until Doge Jacopo Tiepolo gave them some unreclaimed land in 1236, adjacent to the abandoned Benedictine abbey they were inhabiting. The church that they built — dedicated in 1280 extending the abbey — was much smaller than the one we see today, and faced in the opposite direction. The current church was begun shortly after, in 1340, but work was slow - the old church was still being used in 1415, but it was demolished shortly after this date to complete the East end of the nave, work having been begun at the West end. The new church was finished in 1442, and consecrated in 1492. Its plan is attributed to Fra' Scipione Bon, who has a tomb in the church. The monastery dates from 1256, being renovated after a fire in 1390 and having two cloisters, one by Jacopo Sansovino and the other attributed to Andrea Palladio.

Introduction and ideal starting point for any “smart” itinerary to the city.

Represents the primitive city centre, located on the west bank of the Gran Canal where the depth of its waters and banks higher than the average of other islets ("Rivo Alto") granted the new-born "Serenissima Republic" an appropriate protection from the threat caused by the frankish fleet commanded by Pipino, son of Charlemagne, that unsuccessfully attempted to invade the lagoon around the 810.

Heart of the Venetian Governement, home of the Magistracys linked to economics activities, banking and financial centre, the islands of Rialto ("Insule") were all a flowering of trade shops and processing of precious materials imported from far-away, around the rich market of fruits and vegetables, fish and game from the lagoon and the mainland.

Here habits, idiom, faces and arts are timeless and that’s why to savour even tough to know the area of Rialto is one of the best ways to capture the essence of a city that has no equals in the World.

The local Toponymy is indicative: "Erbaria" (Vegetable market/grocery); "Casaria (Milk and Cheese market); "Naranzaria" (Fruit market); "Campo de le Becarie" (field of the butcher shops); "Pescaria" (fish market); "Calle dei Boteri" (artisans making barrels, vats and bottles), and still: "Riva del Fero" (bank of Iron); "Riva del Carbon"(bank of Coal); "Riva del vin" (bank of Wine); "Riva de l’Ogio" (bank of Oil); "Fabbriche Nove" (new factories); "Bancogiro" (public Bank established by the local Republic); "Ruga degli Oresi" (Goldsmiths) evoke sounds and colors taken from the ancient crafts in operation along the banks and in the picturesque maze of alleys and fields in this area.

"EL GOBBO DE RIALTO" (English: The Hunchback of Rialto") is a granite statue of a hunchback found opposite the Church of St. Giacomo di Rialto, located in the namesake Square. Sculpted by Pietro da Salò in the 16th Century, the statue takes the form of a crouching, naked hunchback supporting a small flight of steps. According to the writings of the local history, it was unveiled on 16 November 1541 and was used as a podium for official proclamations: the statutes of Venice or the names of offenders would be proclaimed by an official standing on the block at the same time as they were read out at PIETRA DEL BANDO near Piazza San Marco. It was also used as the finishing point for a punishment for minor misdemeanours; the guilty party would be stripped naked and made to run the gauntlet of citizens lining the streets from Piazza San Marco to the Rialto, saving themselves further humiliation by kissing the statue. By the 19th century, time had taken its toll on the statue and, in 1836, it was restored with funds provided by the civic authorities.
The block above the hunchback's head now bears a Latin inscription with the date of the restoration.

It is said to communicate with the PASQUINO, one of the talking statues of Rome. From the early 16th Century the Pasquino, a statue of a torso, was used as an agent for critical commentaries against the Pope and the authorities: satirical notes would be attached anonymously to the base of the statue purporting to come from the Pasquino himself. Other statues in Rome would be used to fulfill a similar purpose and establish a dialogue. In the 17th Century the Pasquino exchanged correspondence with Il Gobbo concerning the Republic of Venice, Pope Paul V and the writings of Cardinals Baronio and Bellarmino.

The characters of Launcelot Gobbo and his father, Old Gobbo, in William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice may been inspired by this traditional symbol of the Rialto.
