On April 25th, in Venice, the Feast of Saint Mark, the city’s patron saint, is celebrated. On this day, it is traditional to give a “bocolo,” a red rose.
According to legend, Tancredi, a young man of humble origins, fell in love with Maria, the daughter of a nobleman. To gain her father’s approval, he went to war. During a battle, he was mortally wounded and, before dying, picked a rose stained with his blood and asked for it to be delivered to Maria.
She received the flower on Saint Mark’s Day and died shortly after from grief. Since then, the bocolo has become the symbol of love associated with this Venetian tradition.
Wishing you all a wonderful Feast of Saint Mark and a meaningful Liberation Day 🌹🇮🇹 25April
