Military and battlefield history is the specialty of Jerseyman Marc Yates, owner and guide of History Alive! and Jersey Military Tours, and an Accredited Guide of the International Guild of Battlefield Guides and Jersey Tour Guides Association member. Explore Jersey's military history and battles from the Iron Age to the German Occupation in WW2 with Marc and enjoy the fabulous Jersey scenery and

hospitality at the same time. Away from Jersey, Marc also leads WW1, WW2 and Napoleonic era tours further afield in Europe. Have a look at my website for more details of the different tours. If you are interested in archaeology / ancient history, consider our tour of Jersey's megalithic past. Private tours are the best way to explore at your own pace and tailored to your interests. You travel in our own luxury, fully insured and licensed vehicles (7 and 16-seaters). Educational school tours and Military Battlefield Conceptual Studies a specialty.

An article published in the Guernsey Press which a friend and fellow Accredited Member of the Guild of Battlefield Guides James Porter has researched.
Of local Jersey interest in so far as a half of the Machine Gun School stationed in Alderney was sent to Jersey (the other half to Guernsey) in mid June 1940 to protect the island's airfield, which was still regarded as strategically important in the task of evacuating troops from NW France after Dunkirk.
After Operation Aerial (the evacuation of troops from St Malo, in which the Jersey "Little Ships" assisted) all the British troops in the Channel Islands (including the very recently arrived machine gunners) were evacuated as the islands were demilitarised in the aftermath of the fall of France.

MP.3 (Marine Pielstand) - another view of this naval artillery observation and range-finding tower, one of three (of nine planned) constructed by the German occupying forces in WW2 and a unique design for the Atlantic Wall only found in the Channel Islands. In the foreground and to the right is the original artillery observation bunker which MP3 was to replace - that bunker appears to have suffered damage, and whilst it is not certain, it may have been caused by rockets/cannon fired by an RAF Typhoon aircraft around D Day.

Thought to have been a mine which has sat on the seabed for more than 75 years outside of Guernsey's main harbour

A naval battle, fought just outside the port of Sluys (in modern day Zeeland, in the Netherlands) between Edward III’s fleet and that of King Philip VI of France’s, had a significant impact on the Channel Islands . France and England had been at war since November 1337 in what would become known...

With Covid 19 restrictions having been in force here in Jersey since March, the Jersey Government has just announced certain relaxations from the lockdown conditions.

What is clear however is that it's going to be a long time before the Island gets back to normal and I can welcome visitors here and on my tours. It is probably going to be several months before travel links are restored to any significant extent.

Having said that, for those guests who have already booked on of my tours, and those who come to Jersey when those restrictions are lifted, we will be ready to welcome you.

Bearing in mind that even when travel restrictions are lifted, I expect that some social distancing will still be in force and/or expected by guests, and I therefore put the following in place:

1. I will only be taking private tours for family and/or friends groups who are not social distancing between themselves (i.e. it won't be a public tour and you won't find strangers joining it);

2. I am satisfied that my vehicles, with minor modification, will be suitable for use so I can practise social distancing from you and enter and exit the vehicle by a separate door;

3. The vehicles already have built in microphones to the rear so no problem hearing me in the front! You will still be able to view the TV screens in the vehicles which we use on tours;

4. At stops, I will guide you at a distance and where we go, there will be no issue in achieving social distancing as required;

5. The vehicles will be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected prior to each tour and we will carry hand sanitiser in the vehicle.

So I hope that when you are able to come to Jersey, I will be welcoming you with the best of Jersey hospitality and in a safe and secure manner!

I look forward to seeing you soon!
