From Poverty to Purpose: The Gift That Changed My Life Forever

Today would have been my mother’s 93rd birthday.
I’m sharing this video as a tribute to her—and the journey her love made possible.

I grew up with a single mother who worked long hours as a housekeeper. To protect her job, she would hide me in the staff quarters after school. We didn’t have much, but we had each other.
One day, everything changed. A Canadian couple I met on the beach saw something in me and chose to invest in my future. They sponsored my education through high school and college.
That single act of kindness didn’t just change my life; it shaped my purpose.

Because of my mother’s sacrifice and that unexpected gift, I went on to become a teacher and later an entrepreneur. In 2005, I founded Jamaica Volunteer Programs, creating opportunities for
travellers to give back to local communities. My journey continued with my son Omar, and together we built Global Service Adventures, expanding opportunities for youth to learn beyond the classroom.

What began with one act of kindness has now impacted so many lives. Everything I am and everything I’ve built started with my mother.

Happy Heavenly Birthday, Mama. Your legacy lives on through me, through my family, and through every young person we inspire.

Reflecting on Impact and Gratitude
As I look back on the journey of Jamaica Volunteer Programs, I’m reminded of the incredible stories that have unfolded through the lives we've touched. I recently revisited this heartfelt message from a parent that filled me with pride and gratitude:
"Maureen, I want to let you know my daughter, Dana, who was in your program 5 years ago, is doing great! She used her experience with you to write a beautiful essay to help her get into college and receive a full scholarship.

This past May, she graduated as a Salutatorian and started a great teaching job today. She is also attending Teacher's College at Columbia for graduate school. Thank you for your program and the great college recommendation you wrote for her, which really made me cry! I hope your business is going well. Not only do you deserve to be successful, but what you do to help the children in your community is priceless!"
Stories like Dana's are why I do what I do. Knowing that our programs create unforgettable experiences and open doors to life-changing opportunities fills my heart with joy.

As a program provider, I enjoy spending time outdoors, particularly in the mornings when I can go for long walks and hikes. I frequently extend invitations to travelers, students, and volunteers visiting Jamaica to join me on these hikes.

Walking provides an intimate view of the villages and communities we pass through, and it's essential to bring a camera or phone along to capture those hard-to-get shots. Along the way, we often encounter farmers on their way to their fields, and we stop to chat with them and learn about their lives and struggles. We also take the time to observe the locals as they collect water from community pipes, offering a unique opportunity for travelers to learn about Jamaica's cultural traditions.

I find these experiences to be the most fun and exciting moments, as they allow me to connect with travelers on a deeper level and establish lasting friendships. Join me on my next adventure in Jamaica, and let's explore the beauty and culture of this amazing country together.

Today is our Founder's Wedding Anniversary, this is what she had to say:

"My husband and I are celebrating our 41st anniversary today and I want to use this milestone to connect with others. We both do International Educational Programs and believe in the power of travel to expand one’s worldview. That’s why we’re offering travel programs for community service and leadership development."

Last weekend our volunteers went on an exciting adventure! They journeyed to Ochi Rios, a popular city in Jamaica where they got up close and personal with horses on the beach. After that, it was time for ice cream then swimming and enjoying fish and bammy at the beach all day long--what could be better?!
