World Wetlands Day World Wetlands Day is observed annually on February 2 to raise global awareness about the critical role wetlands play for people and the planet, marking the adoption of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands in 1971.This year’s observance comes at a particularly meaningful time for Jamaica. In the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, several wetland areas were significantly disrupted, with fires and environmental damage underscoring just how vulnerable—and vital—these ecosystems are. Wetlands serve as natural buffers against extreme weather, protect biodiversity, purify water, and support livelihoods that are closely linked to our tourism and hospitality sector.The 2026 theme, “Wetlands and traditional knowledge: Celebrating cultural heritage,” highlights the enduring value of indigenous and community-based knowledge in sustaining wetlands and preserving cultural identity across generations.
