➳𝙄𝙣 𝙈𝙞 𝘽𝙖𝙘𝙠𝙔𝘼𝘼𝘿: 𝙅𝙖𝙢𝙖𝙞𝙘𝙖 𝙂𝙞𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙨 𝙎𝙘𝙪𝙡𝙥𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙋𝙖𝙧𝙠 & 𝘼𝙧𝙩 𝙂𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙧𝙮 [𝙎𝙖𝙫𝙚]

In Negril and looking for something unique to do?

A 30 minute drive through the prettiest country roads take you up almost 300 feet above sea level to Moreland Hill, where you will find yourself smack dab in the middle of a nature reserve. But what will surprise you is amount of local art hidden away up there, it's a 𝙛𝙪𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙤𝙛 𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙨🎨.

The property spans over 4,000 𝙖𝙘𝙧𝙚𝙨 with the most amazing views.

Over 40 sculptures, carved from stone found on Moreland Hill, are embeded in the the landscape and tell great stories. The artist, 𝙁𝙞𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙮 "𝙁𝙞𝙩𝙯𝙮" 𝙍𝙪𝙨𝙨𝙚𝙡𝙡 comes from Orange Hill, Westmoreland.

Countless paintings, drawings and wood carvings. I was not expecting it, it blew me away! We learned that most of the paintings were done by 𝘽𝙧𝙪𝙘𝙚 𝘼𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙣, a man originally from St. Elizabeth who grew up in Hanover.

The owner Ricky, also from Orange Hill, bought the historical rum and sugar estate over 30 years ago and began planting trees. He 𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙙 600,000 𝙩𝙧𝙚𝙚𝙨🌳, all varieties, you name it. It was Ricky's dream to own a rainforest!

Upon leaving, Jonas noticed a house perched up on a side road and in true fashion we went to explore.

💯𝘽𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙙𝙚𝙘𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣!

We bucked up on 𝙍𝙞𝙘𝙠𝙮 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝘽𝙧𝙪𝙘𝙚 𝘼𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙣. We chatted for a while, watching Bruce in action and learning all about the 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙩𝙮'𝙨 𝙝𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙮 & 𝙨𝙞𝙜𝙣𝙞𝙛𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙨𝙡𝙖𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮.

Plantation owner, John Wetherburn, 𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝𝙩 & 𝙨𝙤𝙡𝙙 𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧 50,000 slaves he called "wild men". He brought them there to train (tame) them & then sold them for more $. This was also the 𝙡𝙖𝙨𝙩 𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙘𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙝 𝙨𝙡𝙖𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 in Jamaica because they were so deep in the country no one knew until many, many years later.

What a history lesson!

➳𝙄𝙣 𝙈𝙞 𝘽𝙖𝙘𝙠𝙔𝘼𝘼𝘿: 𝘿𝙧𝙮 𝙍𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙧! [𝙎𝘼𝙑𝙀]

We 𝙁𝙄𝙉𝘼𝙇𝙇𝙔 made it to 𝘿𝙧𝙮 𝙍𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙧! I honestly can't remember how I found about about these falls or this area in Portland in general, but it has been on for a good little while. But it wasn't until I saw make the trek with that I knew it was time to get serious and just go!

𝘽𝙪𝙩 𝙞𝙩 𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙬𝙖𝙨𝙣'𝙩 𝙝𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙚𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜...

We cancelled 3 times due to weather, curfews and lockdowns!

Finally the day was approaching and things were looking good...and then the dreaded message...

"RAIN in the forecast, we MAY have to cancel, touch base in the morning!"

6am check-in 👍🏽..🏃🏾‍♀️𝙞𝙩'𝙨 𝙜𝙤 𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚 𝙥𝙚𝙤𝙥𝙡𝙚!

Things were looking great and as we were coming out of Annotto Bay...
💧drizzle,
💧💧then rain,
💧💧💧then a down pour...
𝙉𝙤𝙤𝙤𝙤𝙤!!!😭

But we kept driving, we kept touching base..."how's it looking up there?" The rain was just not letting up...we actually turned around, sat in the car and waited...in disbelief and disappointment, we've driven so far, almost 3 hours at this point!

But we were not giving up so easily, 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙙 𝙤𝙛 𝙖𝙙𝙫𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙬𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙬𝙚 𝙗𝙚? So we turned right back around...we kept going!

Even in the downpour,
The muddy trails,
The slippery rocks,
𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙗𝙚𝙖𝙪𝙩𝙮 𝙤𝙛 𝙞𝙩 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙗𝙡𝙚𝙬 𝙢𝙚 𝙖𝙬𝙖𝙮💚

➳𝙄𝙣 𝙈𝙞 𝘽𝙖𝙘𝙠𝙔𝘼𝘼𝘿: 𝙃𝙞𝙠𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙋𝙚𝙣𝙛𝙞𝙚𝙡𝙙 𝙁𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝘽𝙚𝙮𝙤𝙣𝙙! [𝙎𝘼𝙑𝙀]

㋡Friend: Wanna do a quick hike on Sunday? It's 6 miles up and back!

㋛Me: of course! As long as we make it back in time for your birthday brunch!

Well it wasn't 6 miles up and back and NO we did not make it back in time for brunch... We were super late!

We got to the meet up point only to find out the group was hiking all the way to . That was 8 miles up, 𝙊𝙉𝙀 𝙒𝘼𝙔.. ah well, we're here, let's do this! It was an uphill challenge but so beautiful and the bonus...𝙋𝙚𝙣𝙛𝙞𝙚𝙡𝙙 𝙁𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙨! Which BTW was less than half of the journey, so don't worry you don't need to hike for 3 hours to get there.

We left the group to catch a taxi back from Red Light to Papine. Our brunch spot in plain sight but obviously we were not dressed! So down the hill we went in a taxi to get dressed and head right back up, this time by car!!

★𝙂𝙚𝙩𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙤 𝙋𝙚𝙣𝙛𝙞𝙚𝙡𝙙 𝙁𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙨★
→From Papine, head towards Gordon Town.
→When you reach the Gordon Town Community Centre (you will see the famous Miss Lou statue) keep following Gordon Town Road (do not turn right) until you get to a Y in the road.
→Follow that road and continue walking, you will see the welcome to Penfield community sign... Keep walking!
→You will cross over 2 bridges but once you reach the 2nd bridge you are essentially there!

*You could drive as far as Penfield community but note that Gordon Town Road is still damaged so you would have to detour from Irish Town side and come through Savage Pen!

The rest of the hike to RafJam was even more beautiful and even more uphill so if 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙡𝙤𝙤𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙖 𝙡𝙤𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙧 𝙝𝙞𝙠𝙚 𝙤𝙥𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙡𝙚𝙩 𝙢𝙚 𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬, 𝙨𝙚𝙣𝙙 𝙢𝙚 𝙖 𝘿𝙈.

Well, I'm so glad that my cousin .harding insisted we head up to for brunch yesterday....🌺

I pass by 𝘼𝙇𝙇 𝙏𝙃𝙀 𝙏𝙄𝙈𝙀 on my way up to Holywell and it's a shame that I haven't stopped by in years...

The hotel, restaurant and spa are 𝙗𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙩𝙖𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙡𝙮 𝙗𝙚𝙖𝙪𝙩𝙞𝙛𝙪𝙡 and 𝙥𝙚𝙖𝙘𝙚𝙛𝙪𝙡 and it's definitely a 𝙧𝙚𝙡𝙖𝙭𝙞𝙣𝙜 way to spend a Sunday...
