Sam Sharpe Square is the historic heart of downtown Montego Bay, St. James. It is one of Jamaica's most important heritage sites and is named after Jamaica's National Hero, Samuel (Sam) Sharpe, who led the 1831 Christmas Rebellion (also called the Baptist War), an uprising that helped lead to the abolition of slavery. He was tried nearby and executed in what is now the square in 1832.
