Jamaica Swamp Safari Village

A tour of the Jamaica Swamp Safari Village is truly a wonderful experience both to visitors and locals alike.

Jamaica Swamp Safari Village is an amazing little attraction found in Falmouth, Trelawny - a place where intruders will be eaten :-)

But those who visit during opening hours will be kept safe and will be able to see the animals and enjoy the wonders of nature as they tour the village with trained guides.

The Swamp Safari Village was founded by Ross Kananga. He came to Jamaica with a plan to set up a crocodile farm from as early as 1969.

The farm started out as a home to many endangered American Crocodiles, three American Alligators, a pair of Black Leopards, a Python, a pair of Chimpanzees and a pair of Lions.

In fact, a part of the James Bond movie "Live and Let Die" was filmed there with Ross Kananga performing as Roger Moore's stunt double.

The farm became an attraction for locals and visitors alike. They would watch Ross as he wrestled with the crocodiles and interacted with the Leopards and Lions, but Ross died at the age of 32 in America.

The village is now open from 9 am to 4 pm every day and guided 1 and 1/4 hour tours are organized.

Visitors are able to watch as Buddy, the renowned Crocodile handler, calls the crocodiles, feeds and handles them.

The Village is now home to the Jamaican Yellow snake and the almost extinct Jamaican Coney, Capuchin Monkeys, a pair of Barn Owls, a yellow billed parrot, 2 parakeets, a flock of Geese, an Anaconda, a male Green Iguana and other creatures.

Visitors are able to shop at the Kananga House Gift Shop, named after the founder Ross Kananga and enjoy nicely cooked meals at the Safari Jerk Restaurant.

There is also a Village Bar for those who want to enjoy refreshing drinks.

Jamaican Rum, Yo Ho Ho, Gimmie a Bottle

Jamaican Rum is one of the Caribbean’s greatest exports. Although the other Caribbean islands are proud of their rums and other spirits, Jamaica is the crowned king of Caribbean rums, winning all sorts of prizes and awards to boot from the back in the 1870’s.

Jamaican Rum also comes in different colors and tastes…from very dark to light to strong and smooth. Several different brand names of our rum are sold all over the world.

Apart from drinking, Jamaican Rum has many other uses. We Jamaicans use it as cold remedy, with other things added, pour a libation, and flavor other non-alcoholic beverages. We also use it as a rub to fend off nausea.

Appleton is the most popular... there are a variety of "vintages/types" to sample..

Another Jamaican favorite that is really getting popular is the Jamaica Rum Cream. This is a creamy liqueur with a tropical flavor. Jamaica Rum Cream-original flavor, a sweet slightly thick sipper is popular with the women and young folks.

In conclusion, you should enjoy Jamaica Rum to your desire whether you are using it as a traditional remedy or for party drinks. Just like anything else, moderation is the key. Any need to overindulge is a sign of something more serious for which rum may get the blame, however. In your plans for having a little fun with the crowned king of rums, be considerate how you indulge. Irie?
