Many have been asking for ways to support Jamaicans through this disaster. The Jamaican government has been made aware of several fraudulent websites trying to take advantage of this catastrophe, which is appalling. Here are three charities that we actively support, where we know the donations go directly to those in need.
Mustard Seed is a charity that supports disabled and handicapped children that have been abandoned by providing homes, medicines, food, and a family environment. They have 12 homes across the country. They also assist pregnant women in crisis by providing homes and job training. These vulnerable members always need help, now more than ever.
American Friends for Jamaicans has a $1 million matching program right now and they helped tremendously on the South Coast last year after Hurricane Beryl. The people in St Elizabeth have had their homes and livelihoods destroyed twice in 16 months. Many of them are farmers and fisherman who depend on the land and sea to support their families.
Montego Bay Animal Haven rescues and shelters thousands of dogs and cats around the country. They provide spay/neuter clinics to marginalized communities, they educate youth about animal care, and they work with organizations both in Jamaica and abroad to re-home these furry friends. Our own dogs Peaches and Plum were rescued by the Montego Bay Animal Haven. In a crisis such as this, not only do they have to feed and shelter the animals at the haven, but they also need to find loving homes for them so they can have space to rescue more animals in need.
