Meet Toney (the little one)! He showed up today at the boat. At first he was just hanging out taking it all in.
At lunch time, as a typical 10 year old boy, when we went to the store, he asked for a toy.
Knowing his situation, rather than just hand him the toy/money, I invited him to work with us to earn the money. After some hard negotiations and explanation, we got it all worked out.
At the end of the day when it was time for him to help clean up, the young man did a remarkable job! He complained about having to use the hand broom without the handle, but soon had his area spotless. He even cleaned the broom when he was done!!
His toy cost enough that one days wage wasn’t going to cover it (and he worked like a child mind you...not “really” that hard but enough to learn a lesson), that he will return today to work again.
At the end of the day, he’ll get to take his new remote control truck home as his pay.
This was a tough lesson to teach this young man but filled my heart so much! Maybe one day Toney will grow up to come work for us aboard the boat!
