I have now done four river cruises and came home from every one already planning the next. I have written up why this corner of travel is growing so quickly, and why it is about far more than a gentle week on the Rhine.

Smaller ships. Moorings right in the heart of the city. A new view from your window each morning. And rivers well beyond Europe, from the Mekong to the Amazon.

Over the next few days I will be setting some of the worldโ€™s most beautiful journeys against each other, and we start with a proper heavyweight clash.

In one corner, Canada. Turquoise lakes, towering mountains, glaciers and wildlife on a scale that is hard to take in. I have travelled the Rockies by rail myself and it is genuinely one of the most stunning things I have experienced anywhere.

In the other corner, Switzerland. Alpine villages, snow capped peaks and beautifully engineered trains with panoramic windows, climbing through mountain scenery that looks too good to be real.

Canada is big, wild and dramatic. Switzerland is compact, polished and effortlessly pretty.

As I come come close to ending my second year in this business, to say Im having fun is an understatement. But, maybe more importantly, its going quite well too. Personal annual target met by end of September means I can take the rest of the year off doesnt it?

Iโ€™m not telling you that to show off. Iโ€™m telling you because every single one of you had a hand in it, and that genuinely means a lot.
To every client who trusted me with their holiday this year and beyond, thank you. Properly. You are the reason I love what I do.

Now, if you havenโ€™t booked anything with me yet, can I ask you something? Whatever youโ€™re thinking about for 2026/27 or even 28, give me a chance. It costs nothing to have a conversation and I promise Iโ€™ll listen before I say anything. Thatโ€™s not nothing in this industry.

This week I have been at a river cruise forum run by the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) at Malmaison Manchester, and it was a day very well spent.

Time with people who live and breathe river cruising means I come away with fresh insight on what is new and what is changing across Europeโ€™s rivers. That feeds straight back into the advice you get from me, with real knowledge behind every recommendation rather than a brochure.

River cruising really is a great way to travel. It works beautifully for a city break of a few nights or a full week away, taking in wonderful towns, villages and cities across Europe with a new view from your window each morning and no unpacking in between.

Last week I spent some time training in the lovely village of Hertingfordbury, just down the road from me.

NorthAmerica Travel Services, Railbookers Group and Puy du Fou all gave talks, and I came away full of new information on what is coming up and what is changing.

So why does that matter to you? Because the more I know first hand, the better the advice you get. Days like this mean I can recommend a trip with genuine knowledge behind it rather than repeating a brochure, and point you towards options you would struggle to find on your own.
