🌼 Saint of the Day 🌼
Saint Catherine of Siena, Virgin and Doctor of the Church
Feast Day: April 29

The value Catherine makes central in her short life and which sounds clearly and consistently through her experience is complete surrender to Christ. What is most impressive about her is that she learns to view her surrender to her Lord as a goal to be reached through time.

In 1378, the Great Schism began, splitting the allegiance of Christendom between two, then three, popes and putting even saints on opposing sides. Catherine spent the last two years of her life in Rome, in prayer and pleading on behalf of the cause of Pope Urban VI and the unity of the Church. She offered herself as a victim for the Church in its agony. She died surrounded by her “children” and was canonized in 1461.

Catherine ranks high among the mystics and spiritual writers of the Church. In 1939, she and Francis of Assisi were declared co-patrons of Italy. Pope Paul VI named her and Teresa of Avila doctors of the Church in 1970. Her spiritual testament is found in The Dialogue.

🌼 Saint of the Day 🌼
Saint Mark, apostle and evangelist
Feast Day: April 25

The Church celebrates the Feast Day of St. Mark, Apostle and Evangelist, on April 25.

He was one of the four writers of the Gospels, who provide us with a clear account of the life and teaching of Jesus Christ. We know St. Mark, therefore, mostly through his authorship of the second Gospel––the Gospel according to St. Mark. From elsewhere in Scripture, he is also known to have accompanied Paul and Barnabas on their journeys. And from Tradition, he is known to have been the secretary of St. Peter and the founder of the Church in Alexandria, Egypt.

St. Mark fulfilled in his life what every Christian is called to do: proclaim to all people the Good News that is the source of salvation. In particular, Mark’s way was by writing. Others may proclaim the Good News by music, drama, poetry, or by teaching children around a family table.

🌟 Passover 🌟
22-30 April 2024

Passover (Pesach) commemorates the emancipation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt. Pesach is observed by avoiding leaven, and highlighted by the Seder meals that include four cups of wine, eating matzah and bitter herbs, and retelling the story of the Exodus.

In Hebrew it is known as Pesach (which means “to pass over”), because God passed over the Jewish homes when killing the Egyptian firstborn on the very first Passover eve.

Did You Know?

🤍 The first Seder will be on April 22 after nightfall, and the second Seder will be on April 23 after nightfall.

🤍 Passover is celebrated by eating matzah (unleaven bread) and maror (bitter herbs).

🤍 For the duration of the 8 (or 7 days in Israel) of Passover, which celebrates the emancipation of the Hebrews from Egyptian slavery, chametz (leaven) is strictly avoided.
