إسطنبول (بالتركية الحديثة: İstanbul؛ وبالتركية العثمانية: استانبول)، والمعروفة تاريخيًا باسم بيزنطة والقُسْطَنْطِيْنِيَّة والأسِتانة وإسلامبول؛[7] وهي أكبر مدينة في تركيا، ويُنظر إليها كمركز اقتصادي، ثقافي وتاريخي للبلاد. تمتد المدينة على مضيق البوسفور، وتقع في كل من أوروبا وآسيا، حيث يبلغ عدد سكانها أكثر من 15 مليون نسمة، ويشكلون 19٪ من سكان تركيا.[8] إسطنبول هي المدينة الأوروبية الأكثر اكتظاظًا بالسكان، والمدينة الخامسة عشر في العالم.[8][9][10] تُعد إسطنبول مدينة كبرى، حيث تغطي مساحة المدينة 39 مقاطعة تُشكل محافظة اسطنبول.[11] تطوق إسطنبول المرفأ الطبيعي المعروف باسم ”القرن الذهبي“ (بالتركية: Haliç أو Altın Boynuz) الواقع في شمال غرب البلاد، المعروفة قديمًا باسم ”تراقيا“. Istanbul (in modern Turkish: İstanbul; in Ottoman Turkish: Istanbul), historically known as Byzantium, Constantinople, Astana, and Islambul;[7] is the largest city in Turkey, and is seen as the country's economic, cultural and historical center. The city extends on the Bosphorus Strait, and is located in both Europe and Asia, with a population of more than 15 million people, who make up 19% of Turkey's population.[8] Istanbul is the most populous European city, and the fifteenth largest city in the world.[8][9][10] Istanbul is a major city, as the city covers an area of 39 provinces that make up the province of Istanbul.[11] Istanbul surrounds the natural harbor known as the “Golden Horn” (Turkish: Haliç or Altın Boynuz) located in the northwest of the country, formerly known as “Thrace”.
