PETRA ✨ SECRET BACK DOOR

📌 Save this post if you’re planning on visiting Petra!

The Visitor Center is where most tourists enter the lost city, after which a 1.2 km walk through the Siq (a gorge) leads to the famous Treasury, which is considered the starting point of exploring Petra. But did you know Petra has a secret back door? 🙌🏼

Here’s why I can 💯 recommend the back entrance and how to get there! 👇🏼

🥵 ONE-WAY trail instead of two-way:
In Petra, the main trail starts at the Treasury and goes all the way uphill (+ 900 steps) to the Monastery (pictured here and in my previous post), after which you have to take the same route back to the Treasury - Siq - Visitor Center. When you enter Petra through the back door, you only have to conquer the one-way trail from the Monastery downhill to the Treasury!

✨ Be the FIRST one at the Monastery:
If you enter Petra through the back door early in the morning, you’ll have the Monastery all to yourself as all the other tourists start at the Treasury 🙌🏼 + the view on this photo is your first glimpse of the Monastery and that moment is MAGICAL

🙋🏼‍♀️ HOW TO GET THERE:
Book a guide , who will then take you with a 4WD to the back door. Here your tickets will be checked and the guided hike to the Monastery begins! You’ll witness insane views along the way. It’s a challenging but very doable hike - and remember; you’ll only have to walk downhill from the Monastery!

📍 The Siq (Arabic: السيق‎, transliterated al-Sīq, transcribed as-Sīq,[a] literally 'the Shaft') is the main entrance to the ancient Nabatean city of Petra in southern Jordan. Also known as Siqit, it is a dim, narrow gorge (in some points no more than 3 metres (10 ft) wide) and winds its way approximately 1.2 kilometres (0.75 mi) and ends at Petra's most elaborate ruin, Al Khazneh (the Treasury). A wide valley outside leading to the Siq is known as the Bab as-Sīq (Gateway to the Siq).

🇯🇴 How many days to visit Petra?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Tickets to Petra are sold as 1, 2, or 3 day passes. Making the decision on how many days to spend somewhere before you even see the place for yourself can be tough. We always worry that we won’t give a place the time it deserves but at the same time we don’t want to spend too long when we could also be visiting other amazing sites!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Petra is much more than the Treasury and Ad-Deir - it’s an entire town with many other beautiful attractions and hikes! By visiting for 1 day, you can get to the two main attractions, but you won’t have much time left for the smaller spots. 3 days will give you plenty of time to visit everywhere and return to your favorites. For us, 2 days was a good choice as we got to visit all the attractions, sit down for a meal, visit the Treasury a few times at different times of the day, and even go on a couple of hikes. Our days were packed, though, and we arrived early in the morning as the park opened!

📍Iraq al-Amir or Araq el-Amir (Arabic:عراق الأمير - literally, "Caves of the Prince"), is the name shared by a town and nearby caves, within the municipality of Amman in the Jordan Valley. Located about 15 km southwest of the town of Wadi as-Seer, it has a population of about 6000 people, mostly members of the Abbadi tribe. It is located on hills with high and medium altitude, in an area with many springs and famous for its olive trees and other forest trees. About 0.5 km south of the town stands the archaeological site known as Al-Iraq, dominated by a partially restored palace known locally as Qasr Al-Abd, literally "Palace of the Servant", perhaps in connection to the name etched in the nearby caves, believed to be the name of the owner of the ancient estate. There are many caves in the hills which were inhabited during the Copper Age.

📍Umm al-Jamal is an ancient Roman city located in Jordan, 86 km from the Jordanian capital Amman, near the city of Mafraq, close to the Syrian-Jordanian border in the far north of Jordan. Volcanic black.
The city was built on the edge of one of the valleys that descend from the Druze Mountain to the southwest, and this valley is a separating boundary between the Syrian heat that extends from Azraq in the south to the outskirts of Damascus and from Wadi Muqat in the east to Umm al-Jamal in the west with a depth of more than 200 km. This city was built on the edge of the valley. In order to secure water for it as a basic factor for stability, as there are dozens of ponds, water tanks and wells dug on the outskirts of the valley, some of which are still usable today.

📍In the northwestern corner of Jordan, in the hills above the Jordan Valley, are the ruins of the Decapolis city of Gadara, now called Umm Qais. The site is striking because of its juxtaposition of Roman ruins with an abandoned Ottoman-era village, as well as its tremendous vantage point, with views of three countries (Jordan, Syria, and Israel and the Palestinian Territories), encompassing the Golan Heights, Mt Hermon and the Sea of Galilee.
Today Umm Qais is at the forefront of community-tourism development in Jordan, and it's worth staying a night or two to enjoy an increasing array of options, from hiking and biking to beekeeping, foraging and cooking classes.
