In Japan, eating sushi is an art, and getting it right shows respect for the craft! Here are the dos and don’ts to elevate your sushi experience:

Dip Fish, Not Rice: Always dip the fish side into the soy sauce to avoid soggy rice.

Keep Wasabi Subtle: Most sushi already comes with the perfect amount of wasabi. Adding more might be overkill.

Enjoy with Your Hands: It’s totally acceptable to eat sashimi and nigiri with your hands — it’s tradition!

🎉 Pro Tip: Keep your chopsticks on the rest when not in use, and avoid sticking them upright into rice. It's considered a funeral ritual! 🙅‍♂️

Now you're ready to enjoy sushi the Japanese way! 🍣

🇯🇵 The Japanese flag — simple, striking, and full of meaning.

Known as the Hinomaru (日の丸), or "circle of the sun," this iconic design features a red disc representing the sun, centered on a white background. It symbolizes Japan as the "Land of the Rising Sun," a name rooted in mythology — where the sun goddess Amaterasu is said to be the ancestor of Japan’s imperial family.

☀️ The white background stands for purity and honesty, while the red sun represents brightness, sincerity, and warmth. Though the design has been used for centuries, it was only officially adopted as Japan’s national flag in 1999.

🎌 Precision matters: the red circle is perfectly centered, with its diameter exactly 60% of the flag’s height.

Minimalist in appearance but rich in meaning, the Hinomaru is a proud symbol of Japan’s history, culture, and identity.

🍫🇯🇵 Did you know that Japan has over 300 unique KitKat flavours? It's not just a snack here—it’s a cultural phenomenon!

The obsession began in the early 2000s when Nestlé Japan realised that KitKat sounds a lot like “kitto katsu” (きっと勝つ), a Japanese phrase meaning “you will surely win.” 🎓✨ Because of this lucky pun, KitKats became a popular good-luck gift for students before exams, and the brand leaned into that momentum with creativity and regional pride.

Over the years, Japan has released hundreds of limited-edition and regional flavours, each one inspired by local ingredients or traditions. Some favourites include:
🍵 Uji Matcha from Kyoto
🍠 Purple Sweet Potato from Okinawa
🍒 Cherry Blossom from Tokyo
🍶 Sake from Niigata
🧂 Wasabi from Shizuoka

There are even high-end versions crafted by pastry chefs and sold in KitKat Chocolatory boutiques, where you can custom-make your own flavour!

From souvenir shops to convenience stores and airports, these treats are everywhere—and collecting the rarest flavours has become a bucket list item for many travelers. 🧳💕

Have you tried any of Japan’s weird and wonderful KitKat flavours? Which one surprised you the most?

🍣✨ Sushi: A Bite of Japan’s Culinary Art ✨🍣

Sushi isn't just food—it's a craft, a tradition, and a symbol of Japan’s deep respect for seasonality, simplicity, and balance. 🇯🇵 Each piece, from the glistening fish to the perfectly seasoned rice, tells a story of technique, patience, and precision.

But what is sushi, really? At its core, it’s vinegared rice (shari) combined with toppings or fillings known as neta—usually raw or cooked seafood, vegetables, or egg. 🍚🐟🥒

✨ Did you know?

Sushi originated as a preservation method: in ancient Southeast Asia, people wrapped fish in fermented rice to preserve it. The modern form evolved in Japan, with nigiri sushi (hand-pressed sushi) becoming popular during the Edo period (1600s–1800s).

There are many types!
🍣 Nigiri – a slice of fish on a mound of rice
🌯 Maki – rolled sushi with seaweed on the outside
🥢 Temaki – cone-shaped hand rolls
🍱 Chirashi – a bowl of rice topped with assorted sashimi
🌾 Inari – rice tucked inside sweet tofu pockets

The word "sushi" doesn’t mean fish—it refers to the seasoned rice. The fish is optional!

Sushi chefs (itamae) in Japan spend years mastering their knife skills, fish preparation, and even how to press the rice with just the right amount of pressure. It’s a discipline, not just a recipe. 🍶🔪

Whether it’s a $200 omakase meal in Tokyo or a simple tuna roll at your favorite local spot, sushi connects cultures through its elegance and taste. Every bite is a blend of texture, flavor, and tradition—and yes, it tastes even better when eaten with gratitude. 🧡

🍵 Pro tip: Dip the fish, not the rice, in soy sauce—and don’t drown it!
🥢 Bonus: It's totally okay to eat sushi with your hands!

Who else could eat sushi every day and never get tired of it? 🙋‍♀️🙋‍♂️

☀️ Japan Summer Must-Haves: What to Pack + Pick Up Locally ☀️

Summer in Japan is hot, humid, and packed with festivals, fireworks, and outdoor adventures. But it can also catch travelers off guard if you’re not prepared.

Here are a few must-haves to stay cool, comfortable, and culturally in tune:

🧴 UV Protection – The sun is intense, and locals take sun care seriously. Pack SPF 50+ and consider a UV umbrella or arm covers.

💨 Portable Fan – Available everywhere from convenience stores to electronics shops. Some are rechargeable and wearable around the neck.

👘 Yukata (浴衣) – A lightweight summer kimono often worn at festivals. Easy to rent or buy and makes a great souvenir.

🧂 Pocari Sweat / Aquarius – Japan’s answer to Gatorade. These electrolyte drinks are essential in the summer heat.

🧻 Travel Towel or Handkerchief – Many public restrooms don’t have paper towels. Bonus: great for dabbing sweat on the go.

🐛 Bug Repellent – Mosquitoes love the humid evenings. Pick up sprays or patches from a local drugstore.

🧊 Cooling Wipes / Gel Sheets – A lifesaver when you’re melting in the midday sun.

🎆 Festival Schedule – From fireworks to street parades, summer is festival season. Check the local calendar for events near your stay.

📌 Save this checklist and share with a friend heading to Japan!
