We are now in the solar terms chù shǔ 处暑 the Limit of Heat which means the end of the heat (hot summer).
Have you ever heard the old saying "People tend to feel sleepy in spring, doze in summer, and feel tired in autumn"? As the weather cools, many people feel weary. Chinese people often call it the "autumn weariness", which means that your body needs rest. During this time of year, getting some extra sleep is a good idea!
During these days, the temperature can can drop dramatically at night, for the people who have to stay outside till late night, it will be better to bring a jacket with you!
Chinese traditional medicine says that different foods have a cooling (yin/陰) or warming (yang/陽) effect on the body, and that you should change your diet to match changes in the weather. And according to 5 elements theory, autumn is a good time to clear excess heat from our bodies, especially for your spleen and stomach.
The most representative food during this time in Japan is saury, usually they grill it and eat it as a main dish. Except Saury, Duck meat is also said to be a cooling (yin/陰) food, so it’s a great meat to eat during the End of Heat. But just because it’s 'cooling' doesn't mean it has to be eaten cold. It can be roasted duck, cooked with beer or Coke Cola, or turned into duck soup. Traditional Chinese Medicine also says that duck meat is beneficial for our skin, which is another good reason to eat it during the dry autumn days.
And to combine with the seasonal local fruits, Fig is the famous seasonal fruits in Awaji island. Also, under the 5 elements theory the attribute of fig is the Earth, the end of summer. It will be great to making a dish which can combine these to ingredients!
毎年8月23日からは、二十四節気の「処暑」です。そろそろ夏の暑さがおさまり、朝晩はしのぎやすくなってくる頃です。処暑の頃は、気温や気圧の変化を感じやすいとき。それによる体の変化やプチ不調を放っておかないようにすることが、体と心をすこやかに保つポイントになります。
夏と秋の境目である処暑は、疲れやすい時期です。
残暑が厳しい日には体の熱を取る食べ物を、少し空気が涼しい日には逆に体を冷やしすぎないよう、エネルギーとなる食べ物を摂取するなど、いつもより少し体を気遣ってみましょう。
これからの時期は、夏の名残と初秋の変化に対応することが必要になります。暑いからと冷房や冷たい食べ物・飲み物で体を冷やし過ぎた方、また、冷やしてはならないと温め過ぎて体に熱がこもってしまった方、さまざまですが、快適な調子を維持するのは難しいですね。
処暑は秋に差しかかっているので、秋に旬を迎える食べ物がおいしくなる頃です。旬の食材によって、胃と脾臓に夏から蓄積していた熱を下げます。
代表的な食べ物は秋刀魚。秋刀魚を焼いて、大根おろしとすだちを添えて食べるのは、日本人でよかった!と思える瞬間ですね。
秋刀魚だけでなく、中国の漢方薬や五行説に基づいて、体内の熱を下げるには、鴨もいい食材と言われています。
