A June Bloom at Hattori Hydrangea House
Open every day: June and early July (end date depends on the bloom status)
Predicted peak bloom: Mid to late June

Hydrangea, or ‘ajisai’ as they are known in Japanese, are a symbol of the rainy season in Japan. Here in Chiba, this season usually occurs in June, and one of our favorite places to admire the ajisai bloom is along the steep hillsides of the Hattori Hydrangea House in Mobara City. The Hattori family has been cultivating these slopes for decades, resulting in a stunning and colorful display that usually lasts through early July. Visitors can enjoy the beautiful views along the hillside pathways and help support the local community too, as fresh Chiba produce can be purchased and enjoyed here.

Open from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM during June through the beginning of July.
Entrance: 600 yen for adults and 300 yen for elementary school aged children.

A Splendid Spring Rose Garden Outside Tokyo

The Keisei Rose Garden is home to about 1,600 varieties of roses, with an estimated 10,000 rose plants in total, and it’s found outside Tokyo in Chiba’s Yachiyo City. One of the best times to visit here is during the spring bloom, which this year will coincide with the “Palette of Carnival” event that’s happening now through June 14th. In addition to the colorful rose displays, visitors can also enjoy limited-time attractions during the event. While you’re here, we recommend you peruse through the shop that sells rose-themed souvenirs and enjoy a meal at the café too.

🔪 A Ceremony in Japan for the God of Cooking 🔪

This Knife Ceremony, or Hōchōshiki, takes place three times per year at Takabe Jinja, Japan’s only shrine dedicated to the God of Cooking. Last May, we witnessed Chef Hakushin Nagashima prepare a sea bream while adhering to this centuries-old ritual’s golden rule: he never touches the sacred fish with his hands, not even once. Since the hands are considered impure, the chef employs carefully choreographed maneuvers, only touching the fish with a knife and chopsticks. This ritual originated in the 9th century imperial court, but the history of how this shrine came to honor the god of cooking is said to date back 1,800 years, long drawing aspiring chefs and food makers to its hallowed grounds.

The ceremony is held every year on May 17, October 17, and November 23.

It’s nearly Diamond Fuji Season 2026 in Tateyama!

The sight of the sun setting directly over Mt. Fuji’s summit is known as “Diamond Fuji.” One of the best areas in Japan to enjoy this view is where Tokyo Bay opens up into the Pacific Ocean just off the shores of Chiba’s Tateyama City. If you’re in the Chiba or Tokyo areas from mid-May and the skies are clear, you can come down to Tateyama to see this stunning sunset scene for yourself! If you can’t make it this time around, there will be another chance to see a Diamond Fuji in July too.

Forecasted dates for recommended Diamond Fuji viewing spots (weather permitting and angle of the sunset will vary depending on exact location):

📍 Sunset Pier (Photo 2):
May 15 | July 28
Access: Located at the "Nagisa no Eki" Tateyama roadside station

📍 Hojo Beach (Photo 3):
May 13 | July 30
Access: About a 5-minute walk from JR Tateyama Station

📍 Sunosaki Shrine (Photo 4):
May 27 | July 16
Access: The pictured torii gate is across the street from Sunosaki Shrine

No matter the time of year, Tateyama is a great destination if you’re looking for a laid-back seaside spot outside Tokyo. With its coastal roads dotted with countless hidden gems, historical sites, and culinary delights, Tateyama has all you need for an authentic and off-the-beaten-path Japan travel experience.
