Every year at the beginning of May, Otari Town holds a festival involving a 9km walk on the Shionomichi ‘ Salt Trail’ with many participants dressing up in traditional costumes with plenty of refreshments and entertainment along the way. After having walked the trail many times, it was nice for me to finally participate in the matsuri.

This is one of our favorite hamlets where we spend the night in a 200 year old thatched roof farmhouse on our Shionomichi Trail walks.

The Shionomichi Salt Trail - a sublime walk through forests, lakes, gorges, fields and traditional villages. A cultural walk back in time leaving you feeling refreshed and impressed.
Shumi Stay Japan – taking your hobby on holiday to Japan
Shumi Stay Japan is about providing any kind of hobby group with a leisurely program where they can stay in Japan to pursue their hobby and do it together with Japanese who share the same passion, that is, their “shumi”.
Shumi Stay Japan was conceived by Phil and Kazuko Ingram, who have over 60 years of combined living and working experience in Japan between them and saw a gap in the market for Australians who want to have a leisurely stay in Japan and meet the local people. They hit on the idea that hobbies are a good way to bring people together – and Japanese people love their shumi.
Shumi Stay Japan will cater for any kind of hobby, such as photography, hiking, bird watching, arts and crafts like pottery, paper making, weaving and so on. Whatever the shumi, Phil and Kazuko will endeavor to plan an interesting tailor made program for undertaking a club or group’s shumi stay in Japan. Groups stay in interesting regional areas in minshuku or B&B accommodation. Shumi Stay Japan programs are cost effective because groups pay only a flat fee and otherwise all travel, accommodation and meal costs are paid directly to the providers.
