Ohenro – Shozanji
Have you heard of Ohenro? The Shikoku Ohenro Pilgrimage is the Buddhist pilgrimage visiting 88 temples in Shikoku Island. The pilgrimage was started by Buddhist Monk Kudai (Kobo Daishi) 1,200 years ago. The whole circular route takes 40-50 days to complete on foot, but it is of course possible to enjoy the part of the route. Today, I walked in Tokushima prefecture, called as the place of self-awakening in Ohenro, since this is where the pilgrimage starts. The walking path from the 11th temple Fujiidera to the 12th temple Shozanji (and going on...) is said to be one of the most challenging parts. Though not overly strenuous, it was indeed challenging with steep ups and downs. Since the trail from 11th to 12th is unpaved, allowing us to imagine what it was like to do the pilgrimage long ago. No convenience stores nor vending machines along the way, instead, the route is dotted with smaller statues, temples and pastoral villages and surrounded by cedar and other trees for the most part. Following the footsteps that Kobo Daishi and pilgrims walked is really rewarding.
