SUMIDA RIVER FIREWORKS🎆

If you ever visit Tokyo in the summer, one event you shouldn’t miss is the Sumida River Fireworks Festival.
On July 26, the biggest fireworks display was held in Asakusa, which has the oldest history.
It was reported that around 930,000 people attended.
You can see about 20,000 fireworks 🎆

Why is the Sumida river fireworks so popular?
There are several reasons why this fireworks festival has remained a favorite for centuries:

・Over 300 Years of History
This event dates back to the Edo period, making it one of the oldest fireworks festivals in Japan.

・A Historic Location: Asakusa
The festival is held near Sensoji Temple, Tokyo’s oldest and most famous Buddhist temple.

・The Edo Spirit
People in Edo (the old name for Tokyo) were known for their love of flashy, eye-catching displays. This taste for the dramatic still lives on through events like this.

Japan's summer season is very humid, but you can still enjoy the summer festivals.
Every weekend, summer festivals are held all over Japan.

【"Doyo no Ushi no Hi" – July 19 & 31, Days to Eat Eel!】
A Traditional Japanese Way to Beat the Summer Heat🔥

In Japan, there’s a custom of eating eel (unagi) on a day called Doyo no Ushi no Hi.
Why? Because eel is packed with nutrients that help fight summer fatigue, and it’s easy to eat even when your appetite takes a hit in the heat. Plus—it’s so delicious😍

The classic dish is Unaju—grilled eel glazed with a savory-sweet sauce served over rice. Another popular variation is Hitsumabushi, a specialty from Nagoya featuring chopped grilled eel over rice. One of the joys of hitsumabushi is that it can be enjoyed in multiple ways—with condiments like scallions, shredded nori, wasabi, and sansho pepper, and later poured over with a flavorful broth made from bonito or kelp (dashi), like ochazuke.

What’s more, nothing goes to waste with eel—its head, bones, liver, and meat are all cooked in different styles, making it a truly versatile and flavorful fish👍🥢

If you're visiting Japan during this time, don’t miss out on experiencing this unique part of Japanese food culture—unagi!
And if you don’t know where to enjoy unagi, we’re here to help you with restaurant information on where to go in Tokyoℹ️

Check👉"Doyo no Ushi no Hi" is a traditional day in Japan, typically in late July, when it is customary to eat eel (unagi) to boost stamina and prevent summer fatigue☀️💦

【🌄2025 Mt. Fuji Climbing Season Has Begun!】

This year’s official climbing season runs from July 1 to September 10. To protect the environment and ensure safety, new rules have been implemented across all trails.

First, all climbers are required to pay a 4,000 yen access fee per person. The Yoshida Trail recommends online reservations in advance, while the other routes require completing an e-learning course and pre-registration before climbing.

In addition, entry is prohibited between 2:00 PM and 3:00 AM unless you have a mountain hut reservation. For the Yoshida Trail, if the number of climbers exceeds 4,000 per day, the gate may be closed — so please plan accordingly.

To enjoy a safe and pleasant climb, don’t forget to reserve in advance and check the latest info. Let’s follow the rules and preserve the beauty of Mt. Fuji for generations to come.😆

【 Star Festival: May All Our Wishes Come True 】

I visited Fukutoku Shrine in Nihonbashi, Tokyo, to take part in the otakiage ritual and offer the Tanabata wish papers written by our lovely guests.
Otakiage is a sacred ceremony where items like wish papers or amulets are burned with gratitude and returned to the heavens through purifying fire.
For Tanabata, it’s a beautiful way to send our wishes up to the sky.
✨ May all our hopes reach the stars and come true. 🌠

Fukutoku Shrine has been known since the Edo period for blessings of good fortune and lottery luck.
These days, many people also come to pray for winning concert or event tickets 🎫🎶
Right next to the shrine is Fukutoku no Mori, a peaceful green space that feels like a hidden oasis in the city 🍃
There’s even a free shuttle bus from Tokyo Station to Nihonbashi 🚌
If you’re ever nearby, I highly recommend stopping by this spiritual spot in the heart of Tokyo 🕊️💫

【How Japanese People Spend Summer🥵】

Japanese summers can be super hot and humid, but people have come up with all kinds of ways to stay cool and enjoy the season.

1. Traditional Houses & Architecture
In traditional Japanese homes, the eaves are designed to be deep, which blocks the harsh sunlight from entering the rooms. This keeps the indoor temperature cooler. People also hang sudare (bamboo or reed screens) from the eaves. These screens provide shade but still let the air flow, which is perfect for keeping things cool while allowing a breeze to come through.

2. Sprinkling Water (Uchimizu)💧💦
Another trick is uchimizu—sprinkling water on the streets or garden. This not only helps keep the dust down, but it also cools the air through evaporation, giving a refreshing feeling. It’s a simple, but effective way to beat the heat.

3. Clothing Choices👚👕
In summer, Japanese people choose lightweight, breathable clothing like h**p and cotton to stay comfortable. Yukata (a casual kimono) is popular at summer festivals or fireworks displays, and young people especially love wearing them for these occasions.

4. Cool Gadgets & Accessories👓👒
To stay even cooler, many people use higasa (sun umbrellas), which are widely used in Japan during the summer. Not only do they provide shade, but they also add a bit of style to the outfit. In addition, small cooling gadgets like neck fans or portable hand fans are super popular to carry around and help stay cool while walking outside.

5. Wind Chimes (Furin)🌿
Another fun way to enjoy summer in Japan is by listening to furin—traditional wind chimes. These were originally believed to ward off evil spirits, but over time, they’ve become a symbol of summer. The sound of a wind chime swaying in the breeze is said to bring a sense of coolness, even though it doesn’t actually lower the temperature. It’s a small thing, but it’s part of what makes summer in Japan feel unique.

6. Summer Foods🥢
Japanese summer foods also help keep things cool. For example, tokoroten, made from a type of seaweed called tengusa, is a refreshing, jelly-like dish that’s easy to eat and cools you down. The clear, noodle-like texture makes it look refreshing, and it’s light on the stomach. People also enjoy dishes with cooling ingredients like lemon or vinegar to stimulate the appetite and make eating in the heat more enjoyable.

Tanabata, the Star Festival, is an annual event celebrated on July 7th.🎋
It originates from the legend of two stars, Orihime (Vega) and Hikoboshi (Altair), who are allowed to meet only once a year on this day.😢❤️
It is said that if you write your wish on a strip of paper called a tanzaku and hang it on bamboo branches, your wish will come true.✨

【Preparing for Rice Planting – From Seedlings to Fields】
June marks the start of rice planting season in Japan. But before we plant, we begin with 育苗 (ikubyo) — growing rice seedlings in trays or greenhouses. Tiny seeds are carefully nurtured until they become strong, healthy seedlings.

Meanwhile, the rice paddies are prepared—flooded and leveled—ready for planting.
Soon, these young seedlings will be moved from trays to fields in the traditional process of 田植え (taue).

【Japanese Ume harvest season 🍙】
I posted photos of Ume before soaking.
There is a rainy season between June and July in Japan.
It is called Tsuyu, which means "plum rain"—the season of the Ume (plum) harvest
Ume is most famous of Onigiri filling 🍙
As you may know, Ume (plums) are red in color,
but before soaking, they are green.
We eat Ume with onigiri, but not only that—we also drink it as juice and liquor.
Ume has the effect of preventing food from rotting.
Let’s enjoy Ume during Tsuyu, the rainy season!

Summer in Japan isn’t just about the heat; it's also about how we cool down. 🍺 ✨
Beer gardens are one of the symbols of summer in Japan.
