【"Doyo no Ushi no Hi" – July 19 & 31, Days to Eat Eel!】
A Traditional Japanese Way to Beat the Summer Heat🔥
In Japan, there’s a custom of eating eel (unagi) on a day called Doyo no Ushi no Hi.
Why? Because eel is packed with nutrients that help fight summer fatigue, and it’s easy to eat even when your appetite takes a hit in the heat. Plus—it’s so delicious😍
The classic dish is Unaju—grilled eel glazed with a savory-sweet sauce served over rice. Another popular variation is Hitsumabushi, a specialty from Nagoya featuring chopped grilled eel over rice. One of the joys of hitsumabushi is that it can be enjoyed in multiple ways—with condiments like scallions, shredded nori, wasabi, and sansho pepper, and later poured over with a flavorful broth made from bonito or kelp (dashi), like ochazuke.
What’s more, nothing goes to waste with eel—its head, bones, liver, and meat are all cooked in different styles, making it a truly versatile and flavorful fish👍🥢
