"What’s a Torii⛩️?" 🎌🗾
A torii⛩️ is a sacred boundary💫 between the human world🌍 and the divine realm of the gods👁️.
Passing through a torii symbolizes stepping into a sacred space✨.
⛩️ How to Properly Pass Through a Torii Gate
A short guide to showing respect at Shinto shrines in Japan
1️⃣ Bow before entering 🙇
Before walking through the torii, pause and give a small bow.
It’s a gesture of respect toward the sacred space you are about to enter.
2️⃣ Don’t walk in the center 🚶⬅️➡️
The center path is traditionally reserved for the gods (kami-sama).
Step slightly to the left or right when passing through.
3️⃣ Remove your hat and sunglasses 🧢🕶️
As a sign of respect, take off your hat and sunglasses if you're wearing them.
4️⃣ No running or loud voices 🤫
Shrines are sacred and peaceful places. Move calmly and speak quietly.
5️⃣ Bow again when leaving 🙇♂️
After exiting the shrine and passing back through the torii, give another small bow to show gratitude and respect.
✨ You don’t have to be religious to follow these customs —
they’re simply a beautiful way to connect with Japanese culture.
And they make your visit feel even more meaningful. ❤️🇯🇵
🌊 What about torii gates standing in water?
You don’t need to walk through those — just admire them from a respectful distance.
They're meant to be seen as spiritual landmarks, not passed through.
Why are most Torii gates red? 🟥
The vibrant vermilion color is believed to ward off evil spirits and symbolizes life energy and protection
