⛩️ How to Properly Pass Through a Torii Gate
A short guide to showing respect at Shinto shrines in Japan
1️⃣ Bow before entering 🙇
Before walking through the torii, pause and give a small bow.
It’s a gesture of respect toward the sacred space you are about to enter.
2️⃣ Don’t walk in the center 🚶⬅️➡️
The center path is traditionally reserved for the gods (kami-sama).
Step slightly to the left or right when passing through.
3️⃣ Remove your hat and sunglasses 🧢🕶️
As a sign of respect, take off your hat and sunglasses if you're wearing them.
4️⃣ No running or loud voices 🤫
Shrines are sacred and peaceful places. Move calmly and speak quietly.
5️⃣ Bow again when leaving 🙇♂️
After exiting the shrine and passing back through the torii, give another small bow to show gratitude and respect.
