Range Rover Journeys was created to offer travelers a refined perspective on Japan’s diverse heritage. Within this collection, the Ise journey focuses on a region that is often overlooked by visitors coming to Japan, yet remains one of the country's most historically and culturally significant areas.

Home to the Ise Grand Shrine, the spiritual center of Shinto tradition, Ise offers a perspective on Japan that few travelers experience. The surrounding Ise Shima coast is equally distinguished, noted for its natural landscape and its selection as the host site for the 2016 G7 summit.

This itinerary spans the sacred precincts of the shrine and the rugged beauty of the coastline, providing a rare opportunity to explore the terrain that defines the Japanese spirit.

Feel free to reach out to us if you want to incorporate this experience into your itinerary.

With the arrival of April, temperatures across Japan are rising and the sakura have begun to bloom. This season is defined by hanami, the tradition of gathering with friends, family, or colleagues to share food and appreciate the blossoms.

Predicting the peak bloom remains a challenge even for residents, as the timing fluctuates each year. Because the Japanese archipelago stretches from south to north, the progression moves gradually across the country. While many visitors prioritize seeing blossoms in Tokyo and Kyoto, the peak bloom often reaches northern areas toward the end of the month. Exploring destinations outside major hubs provides greater flexibility with travel arrangements and offers a chance to experience the festivities with a more localized character.

Beyond the well-known Somei Yoshino variety, numerous other types of cherry blossoms bloom at different times, providing a wider range of opportunities to witness the sakura in full bloom. For the Japanese, these flowers symbolize both the arrival of spring and the transience of life, serving as a reminder to appreciate the present moment before it passes.

Introducing Range Rover Journeys, a partnership between Kammui and .

We are launching this collection of three inaugural itineraries to explore the regional heritage of Ise, Hakone, and Niseko.

Our signature experience takes place in Ise, a journey documented in our recently produced film featuring architect and restaurateur . The region is defined by its spiritual history and satoumi, the traditional harmony between the coastal community and the sea.

The journey centers on the Ise Grand Shrine, the sacred heart of Shinto tradition. Beyond the shrine, the itinerary includes a visit to Nikenjaya, a traditional confectionery maker that has welcomed pilgrims for over four centuries. Travel across this varied terrain is handled by chauffeured Range Rovers, providing a refined vantage point to observe the shorelines and visit the sacred landmarks that dot the region.

Our main accommodation partner is , an intimate four-villa sanctuary on the Ise Shima coast. Occupying a repurposed 1940s pearl farm, the retreat blends maritime heritage with contemporary design to offer a quiet space overlooking the Pacific.

Together, these elements offer a rare perspective on the intersection of Japan’s spiritual and coastal landscapes.

It is a privilege to see the landscapes and artisans of Fukushima’s Bandai-Asahi National Park celebrated in the recent Japan Special Issue of @‌travelandleisureasia.

The feature showcases a core Kammui belief that Japan’s most profound stories are found at the intersection of nature and culture. Here, it is the story of the wild, wind-swept white pines of the mountains and the 90-year legacy of the Abe family, who have dedicated generations to the art of bonsai.

This recognition is a testament to our local guide partners. Their deep knowledge and community ties allow visitors to experience firsthand the heritage of this land, from the twisted pines high on the national park trails to the distinctive bonsai style they inspire.

At Kammui, our mission is not just to share these places, but to support the people who protect them. When global voices like Travel + Leisure spotlight these communities, it reinforces the importance of preserving regional economies and heritage for the next generation.

As the year draws to a close, the pace of life in Japan begins to slow. While many parts of the world celebrate the New Year with vibrant energy, the season here is traditionally one of stillness and reflection. It is a time centered on the home, shared with family over a period of rest that reaches well beyond the first of January.

For many, the start of the year is marked by hatsumode—the first shrine visit of the year. There is a unique beauty in the tradition of gathering to offer prayers for health and prosperity in the new year, a moment of collective hope in the winter quiet.

We wish to express our sincere gratitude to our partners and guests who have journeyed with us throughout 2025. To our guests currently in Japan, we hope you are finding moments of calm and connection as we move into 2026.

In keeping with local tradition, our team will be taking this time to rest and recharge. We look forward to shaping new adventures with you upon our return in the coming year.

Beyond the high-traffic resorts of Japan lies Myoko Kogen, a region defined by some of the deepest snowfall on earth. While easily accessible from Tokyo, it retains a distinct sense of distance from the city crowds. The atmosphere here is quiet and intentional, offering a level of serenity that is increasingly rare.

The area encompasses five major resorts, ranging from the challenging terrain of Seki Onsen to the expansive runs of Suginohara. Because the landscape is protected within a national park, the backcountry remains raw and uncrowded.

We offer a curated Kammui Adventure plan for Myoko designed to help you navigate this wilderness with expert guidance. Together with our founder, who has been skiing the backcountry across Japan for decades, our local team helps you find the best lines and discover authentic winter retreats. The transition between autumn and winter offers some of the most beautiful landscapes.

Snow is settling on top of the Japan Alps while the lower elevations are still holding onto the warmer hues of fall.

It creates a striking contrast to see two seasons sharing the same landscape. This short window of time is easily one of the most photogenic times of year to visit Japan.

The beautiful irony of climbing Mount Fuji? It’s the only place in Japan where you cannot see Mount Fuji.

Japan’s tallest mountain is so immense, its iconic shape, which has inspired countless poets and artists, is only visible from afar.

After the physical challenge of the descent, the journey isn’t over. We believe the final, essential part of the pilgrimage is reflection. Our recommendation is to rejuvenate at an onsen, further afield from the mountain.

As you soak in restorative waters, you gaze back at the giant you just ascended.

Seeing Fuji from a distance, after you’ve stood on it, gives you a profound, newfound appreciation for its scale, its beauty, and for the physical and mental challenge you just undertook.

The ascent. The stillness. The reflection. This is the complete Fuji experience.

Reach out if you’re interested in this Mount Fuji journey, whether as its own experience or as the perfect tent pole to a multi-destination itinerary in Japan.

The pilgrim's path isn't a race. It’s a chance for self-reflection and meditation.

Picture yourself on the slopes of the sacred mountain, the world unfurling beneath your feet. At night, the stars sparkle with a clarity untouched by the city glow. This is the profound stillness of a mindful ascent.

We reject the "mad rush" to the summit. With our local partners, we pace our hikes to savor the journey, closer to what pilgrims experienced for centuries. Whether you seek the full summit during the official season or a quieter experience, we always climb with intention.

In fact, some of our most profound journeys happen off-season. We can arrange special partial ascents that allow you to witness spring’s fleeting blossoms or autumn's fiery foliage from Fuji’s slopes—sights impossible to see during the summer rush.

Climb for the view, or climb for the feeling? We believe you can, and should, have both.

To climb Mount Fuji is one thing. To walk it as a pilgrim is another.

For ages, Fuji-san was a sacred deity revered from afar. It was so respected that to set foot on it was considered taboo.

The pilgrimage culture, made popular through Buddhism, transformed this reverence. This spiritual practice inspired the Fujikō faith, whose adherents saw the ascent itself as a spiritual rebirth, a journey to a divine realm.

The pilgrimage traditionally started at the foot of the mountain, the gateway to the historic Yoshida Trail. Worn by the footsteps of worshipers traveling from Edo (now Tokyo), this original path is a journey deep into history and reverence.

This is where our journey begins, not at the 5th Station but at the true beginning, where the forest is quiet and the mountain’s spiritual weight first makes itself known. We follow this path to connect with the deep spiritual history of Japan's most iconic landmark.

Let us know if this pilgrimage speaks to you. We can plan it as a standalone journey or weave it into a larger exploration of Japan.

Over the centuries, Shinto and Buddhism have developed and intertwined in Japan, creating a unique spiritual fabric unlike anywhere else in the world. But spirituality here goes beyond shrines and temples. It lives in the rivers, forests, mountains, and the people and local communities.

Here are some of our top spiritual experiences and destinations that can be incorporated into a complete Japan Journey itinerary that includes visits to Tokyo, Kyoto, and other popular destinations.

1. Shugendo Pilgrimages: A unique blend of Shinto and Buddhist traditions, known for the Yamabushi ascetics who traverse pilgrimage trails for spiritual training.

2. Ise Shrine (Mie Prefecture): Among Japan’s most important Shinto shrines, ceremonially rebuilt every 20 years for 14 centuries. A visit here pairs perfectly with a relaxing stay along the Ise Shima coast.

3. Kumano Kodo (Mie, Nara, Wakayama Prefectures): A network of pilgrimage trails connecting the three Grand Shrines of Kumano. This includes Nachi Falls, Japan’s tallest waterfall with a single, uninterrupted drop.

4. Koyasan (Wakayama Prefecture): The center of Shingon Esoteric Buddhism in Japan, this complex was founded by the monk Kukai after his return from China.

5. Mount Fuji & Fujiko Pilgrimage: Discover the spiritual significance of iconic Mt. Fuji. Unlike modern ascents, our experience starts at the base, following the historic path of Fujiko pilgrims.

6. Zen Hiking (Shiga Prefecture): Experience Zen Buddhism, emphasizing calmness and simplicity, with a twist that blends temple stays with meditative hikes around Lake Biwa, cultivating inner tranquility and connection with nature.

Weaving these sacred locations and experiences into your itinerary unveils the deep meaning, harmony, and resilience defining modern Japanese culture. Get in touch when you're ready to plan your next trip to Japan.
