When you visit a shrine in Japan, you cannot enter any of the buildings, but you are generally welcome to wander the grounds free of charge. Some famous shrines do charge a small entry fee of around ¥500. Entry fees are always cash-only.

I almost didn't post this as it isn't a GLOWING review. But I think this is an important one too for people who are considering traveling to Japan. It is absolutely possible in Japan to have a private, fully escorted trip for those who aren't keen on navigating on their own, but pricing for this isn't going to be the same as what you would pay in much of the rest of Asia. Please come with the expectation that pricing is going to be more in line with what you would pay for a fully escorted trip in Western Europe.

Tatami rooms in Japan come with huge closets, as you put away your futon each morning. This gives you space to use the same room to eat and relax during the day!

Ghibli Park tickets went on sale on a Sunday last month so I packed up my laptop and queued while sitting on the beach. Did I feel ridiculous? Absolutely. Did I get Ghibli for my clients? Also yes.

Kyoto has made headlines recently due to their hike in accommodation tax rates. Though this rate increase is significant when compared to the previous rates, the rates are tiered and are only a fraction of your actual room rate.
