Have you ever seen a tug-of-war using a rope over 365 meters long? 💪
Every year, Satsumasendai in Kagoshima hosts one of Japan's oldest and largest tug-of-war festivals, a tradition that has continued for more than 420 years. This year's event is scheduled to take place on September 22, 2026.

Around 3,000 participants split into red and white teams and pull a gigantic rope weighing more than seven tons in an energetic battle through the city's main street. One of the highlights is the daytime preparation on the previous day. From early morning, about 1,500 local residents work together to twist and combine the ropes into a single gigantic rope measuring 365 meters in length, creating an impressive sight.

The competition can sometimes continue for a long time, and when the tug-of-war reaches a deadlock, the judges cut the rope to determine the winner. It is said that the winning team will be blessed with good fortune for the coming year, and this belief adds even more excitement and passion to the festival.

Are you in Kyushu in August? Don't miss this Obon celebration🏮

Obon is one of Japan's most important traditional holidays, a time when families honor their ancestors and, according to Buddhist belief, welcome the spirits of loved ones back home for a few days.

Among the many Obon customs across Japan, one of the most distinctive is Nagasaki's Spirit Boat Procession (Shoro Nagashi), held on August 15. Unlike a quiet memorial ceremony, the city comes alive with colorful spirit boats moving through the streets, accompanied by the unmistakable sound of countless firecrackers. The boats are built and pulled by families who are observing hatsubon, the first Obon after the loss of a close family member. Each boat is carefully decorated in memory of the deceased, and the procession becomes a deeply personal farewell filled with remembrance and emotion. Visitors are welcome to watch the procession as spectators, but they do not join the parade itself.

From evening into the night, the spirit boats continue through the city in a vibrant send-off for the departed souls. Similar spirit-boat traditions can also be found in other parts of Kyushu, including Kumamoto and Saga, but Nagasaki's Shoro Nagashi is especially known for its remarkable scale and flamboyant atmosphere. It has developed into a unique cultural tradition that symbolizes Nagasaki and has even inspired songs and films.

Pottery in Saga: a must-do during your trip around Kyushu🏺✨

Travel back in time at the Shida Pottery Village Museum in Saga, where you can explore a preserved ceramic factory that operated from 1914 to 1984. Stepping onto the grounds feels like entering a different era, with 23 original wooden buildings spread across a historic complex that has been recognized as part of Japan Heritage.

Walk through the former workshops, kilns, and factory buildings to discover how traditional pottery was once produced, then take your visit a step further by joining a hands-on pottery experience and creating your own unique piece to take home. It's a wonderful way to connect with Saga's rich ceramic heritage.

Reservations for pottery experiences can be made through the application form on the museum's website, but the reservation is not confirmed until you receive a response from the museum. If space is available, same-day participation is possible, although same-day reservations are accepted by phone only.

Step back in time in Izumi, a peaceful town in Kagoshima that's home to one of Japan's best-preserved samurai districts. 🏯 🐂

Once an important border town controlling both land and sea routes, Izumi played a strategic role during the Edo period and its historic streets still reflect that legacy today.

Around 150 samurai residences remain in the district, creating a remarkably authentic atmosphere. While most are still private homes, two samurai residences are open to the public as Izumi City’s designated public samurai residences, offering a glimpse into samurai life from over 400 years ago. As the area is designated an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, strict preservation rules help maintain its original appearance, making every stroll feel like a journey into Japan's past.

For an even more memorable experience, hop aboard a traditional oxcart for a leisurely 20-30-minute ride through streets lined with stone walls. Moving at a gentle pace, it's the perfect way to soak in the history and charm of one of Kagoshima's hidden gems.
