Night breeze caresses, Moon hangs round and bright above,
"Gujo Odori" chants rise,
Shamisen, drums, flute blend, Overlapping river's rush, Gujo dance night unfolds.
Swinging lantern lights, Kimono shadows sway soft,
Clapping hands resound,
Forgotten Japanese summer,
Heart dances in one night's dream.
Gujo Odori has been sung and danced in Gujo Hachiman for over 400 years, bringing together tourists and locals alike in the joy of dancing together. Unlike a "watching festival," Gujo Odori is referred to as a "dancing together festival." There are no special costumes or difficult dance moves; anyone can freely join in.
Due to its uniqueness and history, Gujo Odori was registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2022.
The festival runs for 30 nights from July to September. Especially from August 13th to 16th, tens of thousands of people dance through the night from dusk till dawn. Participating in the dance, you can make friends with people you didn't know before and create wonderful memories of experiencing Japan.
