Hachinohe Enburi, one of the three major winter festivals in Aomori, is designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Asset by the national government. It is a local performing art handed down in the Hachinohe area, named after the farming implement "eburi" used to level the soil in the fields, in hopes for a good harvest.
Usually held from February 17 to 20, the festival begins with a "dedication" to the Chojayama Shinra Shrine, followed by various events such as "Simultaneous Zuri," in which more than 30 groups perform the dance simultaneously in downtown Hachinohe, and "Oniwa Enburi," which is performed at the old house of a wealthy merchant built in the Meiji period.
