Don't miss this sacred shrine in Hamamatsu🔥⛩️

Hidden in the mountains of Hamamatsu, Akiha Shrine is one of Japan’s most important shrines dedicated to fire protection. Founded in 709, it is the head shrine of all Akiha shrines across Japan and enshrines the fire deity Hinokagutsuchi-no-Omikami.

The shrine is divided into two sacred areas: the Lower Shrine at the base of Mount Akiha, and the Upper Shrine deep in the mountain forest. A historic 4-km pilgrimage route connects them, with a 750-meter elevation gain and a walking time of about 1.5-2 hours.

At the summit, a spectacular golden torii gate shines above the mountains, earning the nickname “Torii in the Sky.” From here you can also try the fun tengu plate-throwing ritual: write your wish on the plate and toss it through the ring for good luck.

This area is specially beautiful during autumn, but worth visting all year around. Do you want to visit Akiha Shrine during your trip to Hamamatsu?

Spring is slowly arriving at Hamamatsu Flower Park 🌸🌷

In early March, the park begins to fill with color: the last plum blossoms, several varieties of early sakura, and beautiful spring tulips blooming throughout the gardens. One of the highlights is taking the "Flower Train" through the cherry blossoms, or simply enjoying a relaxing hanami picnic surrounded by flowers.

And the best is yet to come! By the end of the month, the park transforms into an incredible landscape of cherry blossoms in full bloom, followed by the fragrant wisteria tunnel in late April.

If you’re planning a spring trip to Hamamatsu, this park is definitely worth adding to your itinerary.

Want to buy the most famous snack from Hamamatsu? Then, head to this shop!🤤🏪

With 139 years of history, Shunkado began as a small Japanese confectionery in 1887 and grew into one of Hamamatsu’s most iconic sweets makers. Its signature creation, the Unagi Pie, has been loved for over 65 years and is now known nationwide as Shizuoka Prefecture’s classic souvenir.

The idea was born when Koichi Yamazaki, Shunkado’s second president, realized that while few people recognized the name Hamamatsu, Lake Hamana’s eel (unagi) was famous across Japan. That moment led to the creation of a unique sweet made with eel extract—an unexpected but unforgettable flavor that still represents the city today.

Just steps from Hamamatsu Station, the main Shunkado shop is the perfect place to discover all their original confections and, of course, take home the legendary Unagi Pie.

Relax in this temple during your trip to Hamamatsu 🙏🏼🌺

Founded in 725, Gansui-ji Temple is a historic Shingon Buddhist temple located in Hamana Ward. As one of the head temples of the Koyasan Shingon Sect, it enshrines Yakushi Nyorai, the principal Buddha of healing, and is widely visited by those praying for good health and recovery from illness. It is said that this Yakushi Nyorai was originally enshrined about 1,200 years ago to pray for the recovery of an emperor.

The temple is also known for Koyasu Jizo Bosatsu, a guardian deity believed to protect children and ward off misfortune. This statue is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan and is one of the few nationally designated Buddhist statues in Hamamatsu City.
In the main hall where Koyasu Jizo is enshrined, monks perform the sacred Goma fire ritual every day — an esoteric Buddhist practice that has been passed down for over 1,200 years.

Beyond its spiritual importance, Gansui-ji is loved for its seasonal beauty: vibrant autumn foliage and colorful grounds in fall, and delicate cherry blossoms blooming around the temple in February. With its calm atmosphere, traditional architecture, and carefully maintained gardens, Gansui-ji offers a peaceful escape from the city.
