In Akiota, the rice paddies are being filled with water to get ready for rice planting this season!
In Japan, it is common to plant rice in the spring as it will grow throughout the summer. The rice ears will turn golden and be ready for harvesting in the fall
May this year bring us a bountiful rice harvest!

Recently in Akiota, we have been having days where it gets cold and turns warm.
This pattern shows spring is almost here.
At Yasuno Hana-no-Eki Park, the red plums appear to be getting closer to their peak, which makes me feel spring’s arrival.

This week, Japan is getting hit by the strongest cold wave this season, so it is snowing heavily across the country. Even in Akiota, it has been snowing since yesterday, so you will see residents here and there shoveling. This morning, I also helped coworkers shovel snow at Akiota Town Hall for town hall visitors and employees to arrive here safely.

The other day, I participated in a volunteer-led event aimed at children.
After I taught the kids various flower and bird names in English, I played a game with them where we used the words they learned.
The participants immersed themselves in nature near Ryuzukyo, outdoor read-aloud, games, walking, and vendor booths led by elementary and middle school students.

Sandankyo’s fall leaves are currently at their peak!
From the Main Entrance, you can walk to Kurobuchi as you look up at the beautiful shades of green, yellow, and red all around you.
The fall leaf season is short, so come and appreciate the gorgeous fall scenery Sandankyo is well-known for.

The Momiji Walk took place again this year at the foot of Mt. Shinnyu!
Last year, I participated in the 3-km walk, but this year I challenged myself with the 10-km trail.
Along the 10-km trail are some steep sections, and there were moments where I felt at my limits. However, seeing children around me climbing up these parts helped me pull myself together as I did the same.
While I have visited Mt. Shinnyu multiple times, it was my first time exploring the 10-km trail. I discovered Akiota’s only farm during the walk, as I realized there are still fascinating aspects about Akiota I do not know about yet. It made me realize that Akiota is more known for its beautiful nature than for its farms, which changed my perception of what countryside towns in Japan are typically like.

Do you know what this is in the first photo?
This banner lets others know an Autumn Festival will take place in the area.
I can also find the other banners in the second picture around shrines in areas like downtown Hiroshima, but it is rare to spot a large one like in the first.
When I first saw it, I asked a local to learn more about what it was.
The Autumn Festival takes place to express gratitude for the crop harvest.
Depending on the region, the events in an Autumn Festival can differ, but in Akiota, a Shinto ritual followed by a dedication consisting of a Kagura performance takes place at night.

Nearly 4,000 visitors turned out for Akiota’s Fureai Togochi Festival!
The event was full of different stage events, including Kagura, comedy, and music performed by two singers from Ukraine.
This year, the festival featured two Ukrainian singers who performed songs in Ukrainian, English, and Japanese. The two are mother and daughter, as they escaped from Ukraine to escape the Russian invasion and currently reside in Hiroshima.
Watching this year’s performances made me enjoy diversity in the styles of music. While watching Kagura, the taiko drums, distinct to traditional Japanese music, enlivened dramatic moments. The blend of traditional folk and contemporary musical styles in Ukrainian songs shared unfamiliar sounds, giving the audience an unexpected kind of entertainment they got excited about.

Nukui Dam has a tour tunnel with an elevator that visitors can enter for free. It is cool inside, making it seem like a natural cooler as we enter summer.
The signage is only in Japanese, but there is an area where you can clap your hands and hear the sound echo. I was surprised by how quickly the sound carried right after clapping.
Inside the tunnel is a segment where you can touch one of the boulders used to support the dam. I heard it is rare for dams in Japan to provide opportunities like this for feeling a boulder’s surface.
You can also stay at nearby accommodations and try water activities, like standup paddleboarding (SUP) or cycling around the area. Those who wish to participate can make an online reservation for a SUP tour and experience it at Ryuki Lake.
We recommend them for fully experiencing Nukui Dam and Akiota’s incredible nature.

Hydrangeas are blooming across Akiota!
You can see them along the road past Togochi IC Bus Center when heading toward Sandankyo from the Hiroshima Bus Center.
Lately, Akiota is continuing to experience heat as we are move through the rainy season and approach summer, but I can actually feel it is still June whenever I find hydrangeas.

When walking around Yoshimizuen’s pond, I noticed what looked like white bubbles hanging from trees and shrubbery. I asked and learned they are Moriao frogs’ egg masses. Moriao frogs have an interesting trait where they produce eggs up high in trees around water, and the tadpoles that hatch from them drop into the pond with the egg mass.
It is rare to find an area with an easily observable breeding ground, which is why Yoshimizuen’s Moriao frog species is declared a National Treasure in Hiroshima Prefecture.
